Vintage Watches €500 to €1000: Swiss Mechanics Within Reach

The €500 to €1000 bracket is the true entry point into Swiss manufacture watchmaking. Below that, the market is dominated by Japanese watchmaking and the most widespread stock calibres. From €500 onward, you gain access to houses that made their own movements: Omega, Longines, Universal Genève, Tissot, Zenith.

It is also the range where the relationship between movement quality and purchase price is the most favorable. A manual Omega from the 1960s, fitted with an in-house calibre, sits here — while a new watch at the same price offers a standard assembled movement.

Reference Watches Between €500 and €1000

Omega: the Broadest Entry Point

  • Omega Genève — The line most represented in this bracket. Round, cushion, or oval cases, in steel or gold-plated, powered by manual and automatic calibres from the 1960s and 1970s.
  • Omega De Ville — The house’s dressier register: ultra-thin, tonneau or cushion cases, silvered or textured dials.
  • Omega Seamaster Polaris — The steel-and-gold two-tone versions from the 1980s and 1990s regularly fall within this range, with their distinctive integrated bracelet.

Longines and Universal Genève: the Ultra-Thins

These two houses produced dress watches of rare slenderness, often undervalued relative to their technical quality. At Longines, models with integrated Milanese mesh bracelets and dials with Roman numeral indexes have aged particularly well. At Universal Genève , cases tonneau and ultra-thin hand-wound pieces are still found in this range, while the micro-rotor Polerouter belongs to the upper segment.

Tissot, Zenith, Oris, Vulcain: Swiss Robustness

  • Tissot — From antimagnetic pieces from the 1950s to TV-shaped cases from the 1970s, with the two-tone dials known as “tuxedo” among the most sought-after.
  • Zenith — The cushion cases of the 1970s offer access to the Le Locle manufacture without going through the chronograph.
  • Oris — The central-hand calendar, known as the pointer date, displays the date with a hand pointing to a chapter ring numbered from 1 to 31: immediate legibility, rare at this price level.
  • Vulcain — Gold-plated cases from the 1950s and 1960s, understated dials, pared-back manual mechanics.

Small Manufactures and Fashion Houses

This is also the range where one encounters Swiss houses less known to the general public — Huma, Eska, Cortébert, West End Watch, Ruko, Pryngeps — whose gold-plated cases and sector or salmon dials from the 1930s to the 1950s can still be found at measured prices.

Finally, it also includes watches signed by fashion houses: a two-tone Hermès Clipper, Chanel with quilted dial, Dior, Bvlgari Aluminium, Dunhill in vermeil silver, as well as Seiko with dial complications. These pieces are often quartz: the movement matters less than the design and the quality of the case.

Steel, Gold-Plated, Vermeil: What the Case Changes

  • Steel — The most durable. It scratches but does not wear away: a steel case from 1950 can be repolished without significant loss of material.
  • Gold-plated — A layer of gold deposited on a base metal, expressed in microns (10, 20, 40). Very common in this range. The friction areas — lugs, edges, caseback — are the first to show wear. An intact gold-plating is worth more than repolished plating.
  • Vermeil — Sterling silver covered with gold. Thicker and more repairable than plating on brass.

For each piece, the condition of the case is stated in the “General condition” bullet point of the product page, with a rating and the location of signs of wear.

What Creates Value in this Range

  • The integrity of the dial — An original dial, even with patina, is preferable to a repainted dial. Patina born of time is a marker of authenticity; repainting erases the history of the piece.
  • The type of the movement — A manual or automatic manufacture caliber carries more value than a quartz, except on fashion-house watches where design takes precedence.
  • The consistency of the caseback — It is the caseback, not the dial, that is authoritative for the reference. An engraved reference matching the calibre found when opened is the first sign of a watch that has remained in its original condition.
  • Parts availability — Omega, Longines and Tissot calibres from this period are among the best documented in Swiss watchmaking.

The Expertise of Atelier Victor

Each watch is opened and inspected by our watchmakers before being offered for sale: the calibre is identified, the reference verified on the caseback, and the movement serviced. We favour watches only in order to keep the entry price contained — a box and papers do not constitute proof of technical authenticity. Each piece is accompanied by an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a 1-year mechanical warranty and authenticity guaranteed for life. Water resistance: not guaranteed on a vintage watch.

Frequently Asked Questions — Vintage & Pre-Owned Watches (€500–€1000)

Which vintage watch should you choose for a first purchase around €700?

A steel Omega Genève remains the most balanced choice: manufacture calibre, wearable size. For a dressier register, an extra-thin Longines offers a refinement not found in new watches at this level.

Should gold-plated watches be avoided in this range?

No, provided you look at the condition of the plating. The lugs and case edges show wear first. Plating that is still strong in these areas will last for years; plating already coppering at the corners will continue to wear. Each product page pinpoints wear precisely.

Manual, automatic or quartz: what should be prioritised?

Hand-wound gives the thinnest cases and the most pared-back mechanics. Automatic is suited to daily wear. Quartz makes sense for fashion house watches, where the interest of the piece lies in the design, the case and the bracelet rather than in the movement.

How often should a watch in this range be serviced?

A service every 4 to 5 years is sufficient for regular wear. Each watch leaves the atelier serviced, which delays the buyer's first due service accordingly.
