Vintage Zenith Watches Guide
Founded in 1865 in Le Locle by Georges Favre-Jacot, Zenith is the manufacture that created the first integrated high-frequency automatic chronograph — the El Primero (1969), saved from destruction by Charles Vermot and chosen by Rolex for its Daytona for 12 years. From the El Primero A384 to the octagonal Defy, from the chronometry caliber 135 to the Captain — discover our complete guide.

Zenith: The Quest for Absolute Precision
From its inception in 1865, Georges Favre-Jacot revolutionized watchmaking production by bringing all trades under one roof in Le Locle. This complete mastery allowed Zenith to win over 2333 observatory prizes. But its moment of absolute glory came on January 10, 1969, with the presentation of the first integrated high-frequency automatic chronograph.
The El Primero Legend: 36000A/h
The El Primero is not just a movement, it's a tour de force. Beating at 36000A/h (5Hz), it allows the measurement of 1/10th of a second, offering unmatched visual fluidity of the seconds hand. Its integrated column wheel architecture is so perfect that Rolex used it (modified) for its Daytona from 1988 to 2000.
The Rescue by Charles Vermot
The history of Zenith is also one of a heroic act. In 1975, during the quartz crisis, the American management ordered the destruction of mechanical manufacturing tools. Charles Vermot, a visionary watchmaker, secretly hid the plans, cams, and stamps of the El Primero in a secret attic. Without him, this legendary caliber would no longer exist.
The Pillars of the Vintage Zenith Collection
The Historical El Primero References
- A384: Case tonneau (cushion) from the 70s, inverted or tricolor "Panda" dial.
- A386: The classic round case with the famous overlapping blue, gray, and anthracite sub-dials.
Defy: The "Safe"
Launched to compete with the sport-luxury watches of the 70s, the Defy stands out with its robust octagonal case and movement suspension system, making it exceptionally shock-resistant.
Captain and Caliber 135
For dress watch enthusiasts, the Captain range offers discreet elegance. The caliber 135, meanwhile, is a legendary hand-wound movement, winner of multiple chronometry competitions in Neuchâtel.
Expertise and Guarantee Atelier Victor
Servicing an El Primero requires specific expertise due to its high frequency (which requires special lubricants) and its column wheel. At Atelier Victor, our watchmakers master these exceptional calibers. Each watch is checked, serviced and benefits from a one-year mechanical warranty as well as a lifetime authenticity guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions — Vintage Zenith Watches
What is an "integrated" chronograph?
Unlike a "modular" movement (where the chrono function is added to a base caliber), an integrated movement is designed from the outset to be a chronograph. The architecture is finer, more complex, and considered more noble in haute horlogerie.
Is the El Primero the first automatic chronograph in the world?
It's a fascinating historical debate (1969). The Chronomatic (Heuer/Breitling) was presented earlier, and the Seiko 6139 was sold first. However, the El Primero was announced first (January) and remains the most technically advanced (integrated, high frequency, column wheel).
Can a vintage Zenith chronograph be worn daily?
Yes, these movements were designed to last. We simply recommend avoiding water and adhering to the servicing intervals (every 4 to 5 years) to compensate for natural wear due to the high frequency of 36000A/h.
