Atelier Note

A bezel pierced with gold rivets like a deck porthole — the nautical design that Hermès launched in 1981, and the saddler's H repeated link after link.

A two-tone Clipper, Hermès's porthole on the wrist

This Hermès watch is a Clipper, the model that Hermès launched in 1981 and which became the most recognizable of its classic watches. Its founding motif is nautical: the steel bezel, ringed with gold in its recess, is pierced with gold rivets like the porthole of a ship's deck — the detail that defines the Clipper at first glance. The Parisian house manufactures its watches in Switzerland, in Biel, where La Montre Hermès has been established since 1978.

The white dial offers perfect legibility: large black Arabic numerals, drawn in the rounded typography distinctive to Hermès, a fine minute track, the HERMÈS PARIS signature, and a date window at three o'clock. Two slender black hands are enough for the time — white and black, held together by the gold of the bezel.

The two-tone 34mm steel case measures only 6.15mm thick. It extends into the original H-link bracelet: brushed steel plates bridged by golden Hs — the saddler's initial, repeated all the way to the Buckle, adjustable and fastening at 18cm. Their gilding bears the wear of its decades, detailed below and visible in our photographs.

The movement is a Swiss ETA quartz, checked and fitted with a new battery. It is the discreet mechanics that the Clipper has always favored in its classic versions: precise, slim, maintenance-free.

Three points to note

01

Porthole bezel with gold rivets — the Clipper's founding nautical motif since 1981.

02

Original H-link bracelet — the saddler's H repeated all the way to the Buckle, adjustable, with gilding marked by time.

03

Hermès, Swiss manufacture — designed in Paris, made in Biel by La Montre Hermès.

Why choose a vintage Hermès Clipper?

This pre-owned Hermès watch holds a precise place among men's and women's vintage watches: its 34mm case for 44mm of Lug-to-lug is the quintessential unisex format — Hermès conceived it that way, and it suits both wrists equally well. It is the quintessential fashion house watch: a stylist's design, a Swiss watchmaker's execution.

Like all our pre-owned luxury watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Each vintage watch we offer comes with a Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Hermès Clipper?
It is the model that Hermès launched in 1981, which became the most emblematic of its classic watches: a round case with nautical inspiration, whose bezel evokes a riveted porthole. Produced for nearly thirty years in several sizes and variations, the Clipper accompanied the house's entry into serious watchmaking — today it is one of the most sought-after vintage watches from a couture house.

Does Hermès really make its watches?
Yes. The Hermès Watch has been based in Biel, Switzerland, since 1978: the watches are designed by the Parisian house and manufactured in Switzerland, with Swiss movements — here an ETA quartz, the industry benchmark. That is what sets Hermès apart from most fashion houses: a genuine watchmaking presence, which still exists today.

What condition is the bracelet in?
The H-link bracelet is the original one, complete and adjustable — and its gilding bears the wear of its decades: the plating on the Hs has flaked on several links, revealing the base metal beneath, especially near the Buckle. Our photographs show it exactly as it is. The watch head itself is in good condition. The bracelet remains fully functional, and it is a design that Hermès no longer produces.

What do the bezel rivets represent?
They echo the rivet heads of ship portholes — the Clipper takes its name from the great nineteenth-century merchant sailing ships. On this version, the gold rivets punctuate the steel bezel and mirror the gold circle framing the dial: it is the detail that identifies a Clipper at first glance, across all its generations.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 44mm Lug-to-lug, and 6.15mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 18cm, the adjustable bracelet closing at 18cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. It is the quintessential unisex format, which Hermès intended for both wrists, and the two-tone design lends itself equally well to dressy and casual wear.
