Vintage Citizen Watches: Japanese precision and innovation

Founded in 1918 in Tokyo, Citizen established itself as a pillar of global watchmaking alongside Seiko. A pioneer with the Parawater (the first Japanese water-resistant watch) and a forerunner of many innovations, Citizen embodies bold engineering. Citizen period pieces offer unique textured dials and robust designs, representing today one of the best value-for-money propositions in the vintage market.

Citizen vintage & pre-owned: the collector’s models

The manufacture produced timepieces that marked the history of the Japanese industry:

  • Citizen Chronomaster vintage — the absolute top tier. Refined finishes and chronometric precision designed to rival Swiss standards of the 1960s.
  • Citizen Parawater period — a historic piece: launched in 1959, it was the first fully water-resistant Japanese watch. In 1963, during the famous “trans-Pacific test,” Parawater attached to buoys drifted across the ocean and were recovered a year later, intact and functioning, on the American coast.
  • Citizen Automatic Diver — genuine water-resistant pre-owned diving watches (from 120 to 200 m depending on the models), fitted with rotating bezels and excellent legibility.
  • Citizen Jet Auto Dater — recognizable by its distinctive automatic mechanism, this 1960s model served as the basis for the brand’s first diver; a classic of Japanese watchmaking.
  • Citizen Eagle 7 & Crystal Seven — typical 1970s designs (and the Crystal Seven, a slimmer automatic model with a calendar for its era) with faceted cases and colorful dials, perfect for a neo-vintage collection.

Citizen vs Seiko: the bold alternative

If Seiko often favors classicism, Citizen vintage dares to be more adventurous in case shapes and dial textures. Equipped with robust manufacture calibers (the ancestors of the famous Miyota movements, of which Citizen is the manufacturer), Citizen offer exemplary mechanical reliability and a singular aesthetic that appeals to collectors in search of originality.

Frequently Asked Questions — Vintage Citizen Watches

What does “Parawater” mean on a Citizen dial?
It is the historical designation used by Citizen before the term “Water Resistant”. Launched in 1959, the Parawater was the first fully waterproof Japanese watch, paving the way for the brand’s future dive watches. The term was replaced by “Water Resistant” in the early 1970s.

Are Citizen movements easy to maintain?
Absolutely. The vintage calibres of Citizen are renowned for their robust and rational design. Since Citizen is the maker of Miyota movements, the availability of components ensures excellent long-term serviceability.

Which Citizen should you choose for a first automatic watch?
The Citizen Eagle 7 or the Jet Auto Dater are excellent entry points: reliable, accessible, and representative of the golden age of Japanese watch design.
