Atelier Note
The seven letters of the week engraved on the bezel, a crescent running across thirty-one red numerals, sub-seconds below: the calendar watch of the 1950s, the kind that asked its owner to turn the bezel each morning.
A Rogau vintage watch from the 1950s, the day-bezel calendar with red date scale in gold-plated finish
This Rogau vintage watch is a calendar watch of the kind produced in the 1950s for the French market, under assembly brands whose names left behind only their watches: Rogau signs the dial, Ancre 17 rubis and Anti-choc describe the movement, a lever escapement with seventeen jewels, protected against shocks. The calendar is read in two ways: the day, set by hand by turning the bezel engraved with the seven letters of the week, D, L, M, M, J, V, S; the date, indicated by a crescent turning beneath the minute track, on the red scale from 1 to 31 printed around the outer edge. A mechanical watch with hand-wound movement, with sub-seconds, in a 33.3mm gold-plated case.
Its original silvered dial has taken on seventy years of patina, warm and even, specific to this example. Twelve black Arabic numerals, a dot at each hour, a fine minute track, and all around the date scale in red numerals; at six o'clock a sub-seconds register guilloché with concentric circles, topped by the mention Anti-choc in red. Two original golden dauphine hands with patinated luminous channels. The Rogau and Ancre 17 rubis signatures below 12 o'clock.
The gold-plated 33.3mm case, 42mm Lug-to-lug for 11.6mm thick, features its engraved and notched rotating bezel, straight lugs and a steel caseback, under an acrylic Crystal; the fluted crown was replaced during the life of the watch, and the plating shows wear on the lugs and sides. The hand-wound mechanical movement with lever escapement, 17 jewels, has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted on a later black braided 16mm strap with steel Buckle, both later additions.
Three points to note
01
Day bezel — the seven letters of the week engraved on the rotating bezel, the day set by hand.
02
Crescent date display — a crescent index on the red scale from 1 to 31, sub-seconds below.
03
Gold-plated 33.3mm — patinated Arabic numerals, dauphine hands, 17-jewel lever escapement, for him as well as for her.
Why choose a vintage calendar watch?
This vintage Rogau watch holds a precise place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 33.3mm can be worn by either, and it offers a calendar complication from another era, day on the bezel, date by crescent, in a de ville gold-plated watch with a warm patina. A vintage mechanical watch with complication, at the entry-level budget of authentic vintage.
Like all our vintage mechanical watches, this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: verification of the movement, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and authenticity guaranteed for life.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does this watch's calendar work?
In two stages. The date is indicated by a crescent that turns beneath the dial, along the red scale from 1 to 31 printed around the edge; the movement advances it each night. The day, meanwhile, does not depend on the movement: the bezel engraved with the seven letters of the week, D, L, M, M, J, V, S, is turned to bring the letter of the day to the chosen position, generally beneath 12. A simple solution, common on calendar watches of the 1950s.
Who is Rogau?
A discreet brand whose history is undocumented, active on the French market in the 1950s: its dials are in French, Ancre 17 rubis, Anti-choc, and other calendar watches by the brand are known. Like hundreds of assembly brands of the period, it cased lever movements under its own name. It is chosen for its complication and its dial, not for its signature.
What do "Ancre 17 rubis" and "Anti-choc" mean?
Ancre 17 rubis refers to a lever escapement fitted with seventeen jewels, the usual wording found on French-language dials from the 1940s and 1950s; Anti-choc, a shock-protection device that protects the balance staff. Two period assurances, which do not exempt a vintage watch from the usual precautions: keep it away from water and shocks.
Has the movement been checked?
Yes. Our partner watchmakers have checked the 17-jewel movement, the dial, the hands and the case; it is guaranteed for one year. A hand-wound watch must be wound every day, and a vintage watch is not guaranteed water-resistant.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a diameter of 33.3mm, 42mm of Lug-to-lug and a thickness of 11.6mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its engraved bezel and long lugs give it the presence on the wrist of a larger watch. The Lug width measures 16mm.
