Vintage Chanel: the codes of Parisian elegance

Quilted leather, the leather-interwoven chain, the CC clasp — the codes of the house of Chanel are instantly recognizable and move through the decades with undiminished grace. It is precisely this stylistic consistency that makes vintage Chanel pieces so desirable: they are timeless by nature. A period Chanel bag from the 1980s or 1990s is worn today with the same relevance, with the added charm of an authentic patina and craftsmanship that recent productions often struggle to match.

Vintage and pre-owned Chanel bags

  • Vintage Chanel Classic Flap — the most recognizable bag in the world. Available in lambskin or durable caviar leather, with its golden or silver-tone chain (Small, Medium/Classic, or Jumbo sizes).
  • Period Chanel Diana — characterized by its rounded flap, single chain, and compact silhouette, it is one of the most coveted models of the 1990s.
  • Vintage Chanel Camera Bag — the ideal crossbody format. Quilted leather and a fringed CC tassel for a casual-chic spirit.
  • Chanel WOC (Wallet on Chain) — the Pouch Wallet on a chain, the perfect and ingenious evening format.
  • Pre-owned Chanel clutches — in quilted leather or satin, signed with the CC logo to perfect your evening outfits.

Vintage Chanel small leather goods

Our selection of vintage Coin purse Chanel, card holders, CC key rings, and cases offers the most accessible entry point into the world of the rue Cambon label. These are authentic, functional, and immediately identifiable pieces, ideal for a luxury gift or for a very first purchase from Chanel.

Vintage Chanel watches and watchmaking

Our watch department showcases exceptional vintage Chanel watches, including the famous Chanel Première. Created in 1987 by artistic director Jacques Helleu, it was the very first watch from the house — and one of the first watches designed exclusively for women, rather than as a reduced version of a men's model. Its octagonal case is inspired by the stopper of the N°5 perfume bottle, itself designed after the geometry of Place Vendôme; its leather-interwoven chain bracelet echoes that of the quilted bag. Each watch is checked by our watchmakers and covered by a 1-year mechanical guarantee.

Vintage Chanel Guide

Founded by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and carried forward by Karl Lagerfeld for 36 years — Chanel is the house that invented quilted leather, the interwoven chain, and the CC clasp. From the Classic Flap to the Diana, from the Première watch to the WOC — discover our complete guide to the world of vintage and pre-owned Chanel.

Chanel: From Coco to the Classic Flap

The story of the Parisian label begins with Gabrielle Chanel — nicknamed "Coco". An orphan raised in a convent, she opened her first hat boutique in Paris in 1910, then her couture house on rue Cambon in 1918. Chanel revolutionized the feminine silhouette: she freed women from the corset, elevated jersey, created the tweed suit, the little black dress, and the N°5 perfume (1921). Her philosophy: elegance through simplicity.

In February 1955, Chanel gave birth to the bag that would redefine luxury leather goods: the 2.55 (named after its creation date). It was the very first women's handbag designed with a chain shoulder strap, finally freeing women's hands. Its body is crafted in quilted leather (inspired by the jackets worn by stable lads at the racecourse). The clasp is an elegant turn-lock rectangle (known as the "Mademoiselle clasp"), and the interior is adorned with a burgundy red lining.

After Coco's passing in 1971, Karl Lagerfeld took over as creative director in 1983, a position he would hold for 36 years. He reinterpreted the 2.55 to create the Classic Flap: he introduced the famous CC turn-lock clasp and interwove the metal chain with a ribbon of leather. This variation instantly became the most recognizable bag in the world.

Historic Visual Codes

Quilted Leather

The diamond quilting — parallel stitching sewn diagonally — is the visual signature of Chanel. Inspired by the equestrian world and the cushions on Coco's sofa on rue Cambon, it comes in lambskin (with an incredibly soft touch), caviar leather (grained and highly durable), or patent leather.

The Interwoven Chain

The metal chain interwoven with leather is the signature shoulder strap conceived by Karl Lagerfeld. It can be worn long as a single strap, or doubled for a shorter shoulder carry. Its finishes range from radiant gold (24-carat gold-plated on vintage editions) to silver-tone metal (palladium or ruthenium).

The CC Clasp

The interlocking double C forms the house logo. On leather goods, it established itself as the turn-lock clasp on the Classic Flap, thus replacing the rectangular "Mademoiselle" clasp of the original 2.55 model.

Reference Vintage Chanel Bags

The Classic Flap (or Timeless)

The most direct expression of the Chanel style. It comes in three key sizes: Small (23cm), Medium/Classic (25.5cm) ) and Jumbo (30cm). Vintage editions from the 80s and 90s are particularly prized by collectors for the greater thickness of their leather and the radiant gilding of their hardware. On the archival market, prices range between €2000 and €5000 depending on size, leather, and condition (far from current boutique prices now exceeding €10000).

The 2.55 Reissue

The 2.55 Reissue is the faithful reissue of the original 1955 model (launched in 2005 by Karl Lagerfeld). Its distinctive features: the Mademoiselle clasp, an exclusively metallic chain, and calfskin leather often aged. It is the choice of purists.

The Diana Model

Highly sought-after in the 90s and popularized by the Princess of Wales, the Chanel Diana stands out for its very elegant rounded flap and its single chain. This compact and distinctive format is one of the most coveted "small Chanel" bags, trading between €1500 and €3500.

The Camera Bag

A rectangular shoulder format with immediate chic, the Camera Bag is often adorned with a luxurious fringed CC tassel. It is the perfect Chanel for a casual-chic everyday look (between €1000 and €2500).

The WOC (Wallet on Chain)

The perfect fusion between the Wallet and the evening bag. The WOC offers the Chanel DNA (quilted finish, CC logo, fine chain) in an ultra-compact format to carry the essentials with elegance (between €1000 and €2000).

Haute Horlogerie: The Première Watch

Launched in 1987, the Chanel Première is the house's first foray into watchmaking. Its octagonal case echoes the lines of Place Vendôme (and the stopper of the No. 5 perfume), while its bracelet reprises the leather-interwoven chain. These true vintage Jewelry watches are meticulously serviced by the watchmakers of the Atelier Victor and benefit from a 1-year mechanical guarantee.

Rigorous Authentication by Our Experts

Assessing a period Chanel piece is based on uncompromising checkpoints:

  • The hologram and card: Present inside the bag, the hologram sticker shows a unique serial number that makes it possible to date the piece (series 0 to 2 for the 80s/90s). The black authenticity card ideally accompanies it.
  • The quality of the leather: Period caviar leather features a specific, deep grain, while lambskin offers a suppleness recognizable at first touch.
  • The CC clasp: The crossing of the "C"s follows a strict rule (the right C passes over at the top, and under at the bottom). The gold-plating hallmark is often present on vintage models.
  • The stitching: The geometric perfection of the quilting is expressed through perfect continuity of the pattern between the flap and the body of the bag, as well as on the rear patch pocket (known as the "Mona Lisa").

All of these details are scrupulously audited by our specialists, allowing us to provide authenticity guaranteed for life on every creation.

Caring for Your Treasures Chanel

  • Lambskin leather: Exceptionally delicate. Avoid water and friction (beware of color transfer from jeans). Gently nourish it with a very light balm.
  • Caviar leather: Ultra-resistant. A simple slightly damp cloth cleans it effectively.
  • Storage: Never let the chain rest across the leather when storing, as it may leave marks. Always store the bag upright, with the chains inside, stuffed with tissue paper (without ink) in its original dustbag.

Frequently Asked Questions — Chanel Vintage Collection

The distinction between the 2.55 bag and the Classic Flap

The 2.55, conceived by Coco in 1955, is identified by its rectangular clasp ("Mademoiselle") and its exclusively metal chain. The Classic Flap is Karl Lagerfeld's modern interpretation from the 1980s, to which he added the famous interlocking CC turn-lock clasp and the leather-interwoven chain.

The strategic choice between caviar leather and lambskin leather

Caviar leather, robust and scratch-resistant, is the ideal companion for regular, dynamic wear. Lambskin leather, incredibly silky and smooth, offers a more refined aesthetic but requires constant attention. It is a choice between durability and tactile nobility.

The recognized superiority of period caviar leather

The overwhelming majority of experts and collectors agree that caviar leather produced in the 1990s has a much deeper grain, greater thickness, and structural integrity that the house's modern tannages no longer offer today.

The history of the Chanel Première watch

Designed in 1987 by Jacques Helleu, the Première watch captures the full essence of the house in a timepiece: the octagonal case pays tribute to Place Vendôme, while the miniature bracelet echoes the chain of the handbags. It is the house's jewelry-watch creation.

Understanding the serial number and hologram

The hologram affixed inside Chanel leather goods contains a number whose first digits indicate the year of production. A series beginning with 0, 1, or 2 designates a piece from the 1980s or the early 1990s. This number must match the embossed number on the black authenticity card.

The origin of the name of the famous Diana bag

Contrary to popular belief, the house of Chanel never officially named this bag in honor of Lady Diana. It was the enthusiasm of collectors that rechristened it as such, as the Princess of Wales was photographed numerous times carrying this model with its distinctive flap throughout the 1990s.

The evolution of the heritage value of archival pieces

Our philosophy always invites you to prioritize a heartfelt purchase and aesthetic pleasure. It is nonetheless undeniable that the sharp price increases applied in boutiques by the brand have considerably boosted the appeal and financial value of caviar Classic Flaps and Diana bags on the secondary market.
