Seiko Two-tone Dolce: the ultra-thin Japanese dress watch with a two-tone dial
This Seiko watch belongs to the Dolce line, the Japanese house's high-end dress collection, and is equally suited to both a man and a woman. Its two-tone round case, steel with a gold-plated bezel, combines the restraint of steel with the warmth of gold in an ultra-thin design. It measures 35mm (36mm with the crown) with a Lug-to-lug of 38mm and a thickness of only 5.7mm. A piece that is at once slim and substantial, designed to slip beneath a cuff.
The two-tone dial is the heart of the piece. A sunburst silvered center, framed by a fine chemin de fer, radiates amid a light rehaut punctuated by applied gold-tone baton hour markers. The Seiko signature occupies the top of the dial, the Dolce name the bottom. Two slender gold-tone hands and a needle-like seconds hand sweep across the whole: a dress-oriented design, playing on the reflections of the sunburst finish and the contrast of gold on silver.
Inside beats the caliber Seiko 5E31, an analog quartz movement from the 5Exx family that Seiko reserved for its ultra-thin dress cases. It is precisely this fine architecture that allows the watch's 5.7mm profile. The movement of this example was checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. Seiko has not published a precision specification for this caliber: we therefore make no numerical claim.
On the wrist, the two-tone treatment defines the character of the piece. The gold-plated bezel warms the steel case, and the bracelet echoes this alternation on a gadrooned link that hugs the wrist without slack. This very 1990s two-tone vocabulary pairs as well with a gold wedding band as with a steel signet ring. The bracelet is original, adjustable up to a 18cm wrist circumference, and secured by a Buckle folding clasp. The gold-plated crown is set with a dark cabochon.

Dolce is Seiko's high-end dress watch line, developed in the wake of the Grand Quartz. Is the Seiko 5E31 caliber reliable?
Yes. The 5E31 is a three-hand analog quartz movement from the 5Exx family that Seiko reserved for its extra-thin dress cases. Is this Seiko Dolce 5E31-6C70 water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original seals have aged and the case back pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid showers, pools, and the sea. A simple contact with rainwater, however, poses no problem.
What does two-tone treatment mean?
Two-tone combines two metal shades: here, a steel case and bracelet, warmed by a gold-plated bezel and links. This two-tone vocabulary, very much in vogue in the 1990s, has the advantage of matching all Jewelry, gold as well as steel. On this piece, only the gold-colored parts are plated; the rest is steel.
Does a 35 mm case suit which wrist?
