Longines gold-plated cushion: the Swiss dress watch with cream dial and Roman numerals
This Longines watch is a dress watch in a unisex format, worn equally by a woman or a man, signed by one of the oldest Swiss watchmaking houses. Its cushion case, square with broadly softened corners and gold-plated, embodies the classicism of the de ville vintage watch of the 1980s: flat, understated, without the slightest excess. It measures 28mm (29mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 36mm and a thickness of only 4.8mm, Crystal included. A piece made to slip beneath a cuff.
The cream dial is a model of restraint. Twelve black Roman numerals run around it, while an inner railroad minute track, following the cushion shape of the case, frames the signature. Longines' winged hourglass and the house name occupy the top of the dial, with the Quartz mention at the bottom in handwritten italics. Two slender blackened baton hands are all that is needed: no seconds hand, no date, only the essentials read on an immaculate background.
Inside beats a Swiss quartz caliber based on ETA 978, an analog two-hand movement renowned for its extreme finesse, powered by a 364 battery. It is precisely this flat architecture, without a seconds train, that allows the watch's 4.8mm profile. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. Since no reliable original accuracy specification has been published for this caliber, we do not claim any numerical value.
On the wrist, the piece embraces Swiss classicism. The warm gold plating, the restrained size and the cream dial create the archetype of the dinner watch, to be worn with a slim dark strap. It is currently fitted with a black genuine crocodile leather strap, with a stainless steel buckle, which is not original but remains faithful to the language of the piece. The Lug width of 16mm guides the choice of replacement straps toward slim widths.
Three points to note
- The movement is based on an ETA 978: this caliber is no longer produced, but the 364 battery remains available from any watchmaker.
- The case is gold-plated and shows wear as well as a few visible marks, notably on the edges and around 6 o'clock. We prefer to mention it rather than embellish it.
- Longines' winged hourglass is one of the oldest registered watchmaking trademarks: a guarantee of belonging to a house founded in 1832.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the winged logo on the Longines dial represent?
It is the winged hourglass, the Longines emblem since the end of the 19th century and one of the oldest registered watchmaking trademarks in the world. It signifies the piece’s belonging to a Swiss house founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, renowned for its dress watches and its history in sports timekeeping. Its presence on the dial confirms the watch’s authenticity.
What movement powers this Longines quartz?
A Swiss quartz calibre based on ETA 978, a two-hand analog movement renowned for its extreme slimness. It runs on a 364 battery, available from any watchmaker. It is this flat construction, without a seconds train, that allows for the watch’s 4.8mm profile. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and is guaranteed for 1 year.
Is the case solid gold?
No. It is a gold-plated case over a steel base, a common technique on dress watches of this era. The plating brings the warmth and brilliance of gold for a fraction of the price. This piece shows wear to the plating, noted with full transparency and consistent with its age: a soft cloth is enough for care, avoiding any abrasive product.
Is this Longines water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original seals have aged and the pressure of the caseback is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool and the sea. A simple contact with rainwater, however, does not pose any difficulty.
Does this 28mm cushion shape suit which wrist?
With a Lug-to-lug of 36mm and a thickness of 4.8mm, this Longines is suitable for wrists from 15 to 18cm in circumference. The cushion shape, neither fully round nor square, fills the wrist a little more than its dimensions suggest, while retaining the discreet elegance of a dress watch. Its slimness allows it to slip under a shirt cuff.
