Seiko Gold-Plated Round: the Japanese dress watch with a sandblasted gilt dial and Roman numerals

This Seiko watch is a dress watch for both men and women, designed in the most classic spirit of the de ville watch. Its round gold-plated case, with a slim bezel and curved lugs, cultivates a discreet and timeless elegance. It measures 32mm in diameter (33mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 36.5mm and a thickness of just 6.4mm. A fine piece, made to slip under a shirt cuff.

The sandblasted gilt dial is the heart of the piece. Its finely grained surface catches the light without ever producing the smooth sheen of a sunburst dial: it shimmers rather than shines. Twelve gilded Roman numerals surround it, punctuated by an inner dotted railway track that adds subtle depth. Two gilded baton hands and a slender seconds hand complete the display. The Seiko signature sits at the top of the dial, understated and measured.

Inside beats the Seiko calibre 5E31, an analog quartz movement from the 5Exx family that Seiko reserved for its extra-thin dress cases. It is precisely this slim architecture that allows the watch's 6.4mm profile. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. Seiko has not published a precision specification for this calibre: we therefore make no numerical claim.

On the wrist, the piece behaves as a classic de ville watch. The warm gold plating and gilt dial create a monochrome, luminous ensemble, here enhanced by an original genuine crocodile leather strap in brown. This vintage strap should be handled with care; it is fitted with a matching buckle. The of 17mm leaves ample room to change it when the time comes.

Three points to note

  • The piece is in near-new condition: immaculate dial, clean case, with only fine superficial traces of wear consistent with its age.
  • The crocodile leather strap is the original one; as an old strap, it may be fragile and can be replaced if needed.
  • The case is gold-plated, not solid gold: repeated rubbing against a bracelet or a belt buckle should be avoided.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Seiko 5E31 caliber reliable?
Yes. The 5E31 is a three-hand analog quartz movement from the 5Exx family that Seiko reserved for its extra-thin dress cases. Its simple construction makes it durable, and maintenance in practice is limited to battery replacement. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and is covered by a 1-year warranty.

Is the sandblasted gold dial original?
Yes. The gold dial with a sandblasted background, its Roman numerals, and its dotted railroad track are original. The sandblasted finish, finely grained, catches the light in thousands of points rather than reflecting it as a whole: this is what gives the dial its warm, discreet depth, characteristic of finely crafted Seiko dress watches.

Is this Seiko 5E31-6040 water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged and the pressure on the case back is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool, and the sea. However, simple contact with rainwater does not pose any difficulty.

What wrist does a 32mm case suit?
A 32mm diameter with a 36.5mm lug-to-lug fits wrists of around 14 to 18cm. It is the classic dress watch format: discreet on a masculine wrist, perfectly proportioned on a feminine wrist. The slimness of the case, 6.4mm, allows it to be worn under a cuff without discomfort.

How should a gold-plated case be cared for?
Gold plating is a layer of precious metal deposited on a steel case: it wears through abrasion, never through oxidation. Avoid repeated rubbing against a bracelet or a belt buckle, and remove the watch before any manual work. A soft, dry cloth is enough for routine care; abrasive products and ultrasonic baths should be avoided.
