The calibre that Seiko reserved for its gold cases

This Seiko watch reference 4130-5180, produced in November 1976, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 32mm tonneau gold-plated case — a rectangle with four generously rounded corners, a characteristic design of the mid-1970s. Its 6.9mm thickness and 35mm Lug-to-lug make it a compact piece that slips under a cuff effortlessly.

The black lacquered dial bears no numerals. Twelve applied golden baton hour markers, doubled at 12 o’clock, are enough for orientation. The hands follow the same design, in the same tone, and the wording SEIKO QUARTZ occupies the upper part of the dial. The contrast between the deep black background and the gold of the appliqués is what gives this piece all its character: nothing else appears on it. The crown, golden and fluted, is set with a black cabochon that echoes the dial.

Beneath this dial lies the element that sets this watch apart. Calibre 4130 belongs to the family 41, the first compact quartz movement that Seiko produced on a large scale and that remained in the catalogue through most of the 1970s. This particular calibre was not fitted to standard models: the brand reserved it for its high-end references, most of them housed in gold cases.

This movement reflects a particular period in the brand’s history. Seiko had just launched the world’s first quartz wristwatch, the Astron, and was working to bring this technology down from a technical feat to serial production without compromising construction quality in any way. The 41 calibres are the result of that effort.

Three points to note

  • High-end calibre 4130 — Seiko reserved it for its upper-tier references, most of them fitted in gold cases, rather than for standard production models.
  • Black dial with golden appliqués — no numerals, no superfluous wording: the contrast between the black lacquer and the gold creates the entire design.
  • Case tonneau gold-plated — a rectangle with generously rounded corners, an emblematic shape of the 1970s dress watch.

Why choose a vintage Seiko watch?

Buying a vintage Seiko watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a leading Japanese manufacture on a controlled budget, with pieces whose construction has proven its durability. The vintage quartz watches from this period are also the easiest to maintain on the pre-owned market: a battery change is enough to get them running again.

This reference occupies a precise place among vintage men’s and women’s watches: its 32mm format and tonneau case make it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally by both. Japanese pieces from the 1970s with golden cases are now returning to favour, driven by renewed interest in the non-round shapes of that decade.

Like all our pre-owned Seiko watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its consistency with the reference, serial number inspection, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Each Japanese vintage watch that we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What did the 4130 caliber represent for Seiko?
It belongs to the family 41, the first compact quartz movement the brand produced on a large scale, developed as a direct continuation of the Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch. The 4130 in particular was reserved for the high-end references in the catalog, most of them fitted in gold cases. It was therefore not a standard production movement, but the one Seiko installed in its most finely finished models.

What is meant by a tonneau case?
The term refers to a rectangular shape with broadly rounded corners, distinct from the cushion shape, which starts from a square. This silhouette dominated dress watches in the 1970s, before the return to round shapes in the following decade. It fits the wrist better than a round case of equivalent surface area, which explains its wearing comfort.

What should you know about gold plating wear?
Plating is a layer of gold applied over a base metal, which thins over the decades in the areas most exposed to friction — lugs, edges, sides. On this piece, wear is concentrated on the upper right lug, and we photographed it without retouching. Replating is technically possible through a specialist, but it erases the case’s original traces; some collectors advise against it for that reason.

Is a vintage Seiko watch a safe purchase?
It is, provided authenticity is established and the condition is described without reservation. Our watchmakers systematically open the case to verify the calibre, its consistency with the reference and serial number, and inspect the dial, hands, and all components. Every pre-owned Seiko watch sold by Atelier Victor comes with an invoice serving as a certificate of authenticity, a one-year guarantee, and authenticity guaranteed for life.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a width of 32mm, a Lug-to-lug of 35mm, and a thickness of 6.9mm, it suits wrists measuring approximately 15 to 18cm. Its very short Lug-to-lug relative to its width makes it particularly comfortable on a slim wrist. The Lug width measures 19mm, making it easy to change the strap.
