Seiko SilverWave steel: the Japanese quartz watch with TV case and 24-hour scale

This watch Seiko belongs to the SilverWave line, the brand's sport-dress collection from the Japanese marque, and is equally suited to a man or a woman. Its cushion case, in the shape of a television with full angles, entirely in steel, embodies the architectural design of the late 1970s. The case, extended by an integrated bracelet, measures 34mm (36.5mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 39mm and a thickness of 9mm. A dense and graphic piece, rooted in its era.

The silvered white dial takes an unusual approach: a 24-hour scale printed around the periphery, from 13 to 24h, encircles the applied blackened baton indexes. This purely graphic detail gives the dial a technical allure and visually dates it to the great quartz era. The Seiko Quartz signature occupies the top of the dial, the “SQ” medallion and the SilverWave name in script sit at the bottom. Two baton hands and a slender seconds hand sweep across the whole.

Inside beats the Seiko calibre 8221, a three-hand analog quartz movement produced in Japan in the 1980s. It is a carefully made everyday calibre, representative of Seiko's quartz expertise in that period. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipment. Seiko did not publish a precision specification for this calibre: we therefore make no numerical claim.

On the wrist, the integrated bracelet in steel gives the watch a seamless presence, halfway between a dress watch and a sporty de ville. Adjustable up to a 19cm wrist circumference, it extends the TV case without interruption. The fluted crown is set into the right flank. The whole, entirely original, offers the comfort and presence typical of Seiko of this generation.

Three points to note

  • The 24h scale is purely decorative: the watch does not feature a second time zone, but this marking gives it its period technical character.
  • The TV cushion shape and integrated bracelet are typical of the SilverWave line, sought after for its late-1970s design.
  • The brushed steel bears visible signs of use, notably on the case and lugs, consistent with the age of the piece. The dial, however, is clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Seiko SilverWave line?
The SilverWave is a sporty-elegant line of Seiko launched in the 1970s, recognizable by its integrated-bracelet cases and wave-shaped medallion. It brings together watches with a distinctive architectural design, halfway between dress and sport. This example is a quartz version with a TV-shaped cushion case and 24-hour scale dial.

What is the 24-hour scale on the dial for?
On this SilverWave, the 24-hour scale printed around the periphery is purely graphic: it does not correspond to a second time zone, but gives the dial its characteristic technical look from the great quartz era. It is a period style detail, now sought after for its charm.

Is the Seiko 8221 caliber reliable?
Yes. The 8221 is a three-hand analog quartz movement produced in Japan in the 1980s. Its simple construction makes it durable, and in practice its maintenance is limited to battery replacement. The movement of this piece has been checked by our watchmaker and is guaranteed for 1 year.

Is this Seiko SilverWave 8221-5020 water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original seals have aged and the caseback pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid showers, swimming pools, and the sea. However, a simple contact with rainwater does not pose any difficulty.

Does a 34mm case fit which wrist?
At 34mm wide, with a Lug-to-lug of 39mm and an integrated bracelet, this SilverWave is suitable for wrists from 15 to 19cm. Its TV-shaped cushion form gives it a more assertive presence than its measurements might suggest, while retaining the look of a dress watch. Its steel bracelet adjusts to the wrist.
