Atelier Note

A cracked white dial drawn like a monumental clock, a gold-plated case engraved with crenellations and rosettes. A Seiko from February 1987, on blue crocodile leather. Checked, delivered with its Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate.

A 1987 Seiko Big Ben, engraved gold-plated on blue crocodile leather

Seiko presents here a quartz watch like a piece of architecture. The dial reprises the design of the clock on the Elizabeth Tower, in Westminster, and the case features an engraved neo-Gothic-inspired decoration; collectors gave reference 5P30-6150 the nickname Big Ben.

The white dial, with a cracked surface, bears twelve black Roman numerals, each extended by a cross, between two minute tracks. Two openworked black hands, with spearhead tips, turn at the centre, with no seconds hand or window: the reading remains that of a tower clock.

The gold-plated case measures 25mm wide, 33.5mm Lug-to-lug, and 5.3mm thick. On its sides, crenellated columns rise to the smooth lugs; a rosette occupies each of the four corners around the round, polished bezel. The gold-tone crown is positioned at 3 o'clock, and the caseback is steel.

The watch is powered by the Seiko 5P30 quartz calibre; the serial number engraved on the caseback dates its manufacture to February 1987. It is fitted with a blue crocodile leather strap, fastened by a gold-tone Buckle pin buckle, whose deep tone answers the gold of the case.

Three points to note

01

Cracked clock dial — Crossed Roman numerals and double minute track, original.

02

Engraved Case — Crenellated columns and rosettes on 5.3mm gold-plating.

03

Blue crocodile leather — A strap with deep scales, with a gold-tone Buckle pin buckle.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Big Ben nickname come from?
From the dial, designed like that of the clock on the Elizabeth Tower in Westminster: Roman numerals extended by a cross, double minute track circle, openworked hands with spearhead tips. The nickname comes from collectors; the dial bears only the Seiko signature.

How is this watch dated?
By its serial number, engraved on the caseback. At Seiko, the first digit indicates the year within the decade and the second the month: 72•••• corresponds here to February 1987, a period consistent with the other known examples of reference 5P30-6150, all from the 1980s.

Is the strap original?
No. The blue crocodile leather strap and its gold-tone pin buckle were fitted as replacements; the Lug width of 19mm allows the strap to be changed. The dial, hands and crown are original.

Is this watch suitable for a woman's wrist?
Yes. At 25mm wide, 33.5mm Lug-to-lug, and 5.3mm thick, it wears equally well on a man's or woman's wrist, and slips under a cuff.

How do shipping and payment work?
The piece is shipped with tracking and insurance by a trusted carrier, to a collection point or home delivery depending on the destination. Delivery is free.
