Omega Genève Steel: the Swiss dress watch from 1968 with a cushion case and silvered dial
This Omega watch belongs to the Genève line, the collection the maison reserved for its more affordable de ville watches, without ever compromising on movement quality. Unisex, it can be worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its steel cushion case, with rounded flanks and, above all, broad, faceted, and notched lugs, is the piece's true design gesture: these sculpted lugs immediately distinguish it from an ordinary round case. The whole measures 34mm (37mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 40.5mm and a thickness of 10mm.
The sunburst silvered dial radiates from its center, changing in density according to the angle. Twelve applied baton indexes, each hollowed out with a black insert, rhythm the perimeter, framed by a peripheral railroad track. The Omega symbol and the OMEGA signature occupy the top of the dial, the mention Genève the bottom, with SWISS MADE at the base. The hands echo this black insert treatment on the steel, while a slender central seconds hand sweeps across the whole.
Inside beats the Omega 601 caliber, a mechanical hand-wound movement with 17 jewels. It is one of the maison's most widespread and reliable manual calibers from the 1960s, prized for its robustness and the availability of its parts: having it serviced today poses no difficulty. No battery here: the watch is wound by hand every morning, in a gesture that has become rare. The movement of this example has been serviced by our watchmaker.
On the wrist, the piece behaves more like a daily watch than a jewel. The brushed steel, the silvered dial and the Lug-to-lug of 40.5mm give it a distinct presence, halfway between dress and everyday wear. It is fitted on a black grained leather strap, with a Buckle pin buckle, which is not original but respects the sobriety of the whole. The 18mm Lug width leaves complete freedom to change it.

- The watch is mechanical with a hand-wound movement: it must be wound daily in order to run. It is neither an automatic nor a quartz watch.
- The serial number places this piece in 1968, a dating established by Omega reference tables and not by estimation.
- The steel shows visible wear scratches on the lugs and case, consistent with the age of the piece. The dial, for its part, is clean.

What is the Omega Genève line?
The Genève was the line Omega reserved for its most accessible de ville watches, alongside the Seamaster and the Constellation. The positioning was more affordable, but the movements remained in-house, with the same manufacturing seriousness. This is what today makes it one of the most appealing entry points into vintage Omega.
From what year does this Omega date?
From 1968. Unlike many vintage watches, this dating is not an estimate: the serial number engraved on the movement falls within the 27-million range, which Omega reference tables attribute to that year. This is verifiable information, not a mere approximation.
Is the Omega 601 caliber reliable?
Yes, it is even one of its great strengths. The 601 is a hand-wound mechanical movement with 17 jewels, one of the most widespread at Omega during the 1960s. Its wide distribution has a fortunate consequence: spare parts remain available and any watchmaker knows how to service it. How do you wind a hand-wound watch?
Gently turn the crown clockwise, about twenty turns, until you feel resistance. Never force it beyond that point. Daily winding, at the same time each day, is enough to keep the watch running and ensures the best consistency.
Is a 34mm case suitable for which wrist?
With a 34mm diameter but a Lug-to-lug of 40.5mm, this Omega wears larger than its dimensions suggest: its wide, faceted lugs elongate the silhouette. It is suitable for wrists from 15 to 19cm in circumference. This is the classic masculine size of the 1960s, and one that is very sought after today.
