Omega De Ville gold-plated: the small Swiss dress watch with covered lugs and hand-wound movement

This Omega watch belongs to the De Ville line, the dress collection of the Swiss maison, created in 1967 when Omega decided to separate its de ville watches from the Seamaster range. It is a feminine, mechanical piece with a remarkable design: its rectangular gold-plated case features covered lugs, a construction in which the case envelops the strap, which runs beneath the mid-case. It measures 20 mm (23 mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 30 mm and a thickness of 7 mm, Crystal included. A delicate piece, designed for a slim wrist.

The golden dial is the watch's discreet luxury. Its surface is divided into four brushed quadrants, each oriented in a different direction: depending on the angle of the light, the quarters alternately brighten and darken, animating a dial otherwise entirely devoid of indices. The Omega symbol and the OMEGA signature occupy the top, the mention DE VILLE the bottom, SWISS MADE at the base of the dial. Two slender blackened baton hands are all that is needed: no seconds hand, no date, only the play of light.

At its heart beats the Omega 1070 calibre, a mechanical hand-wound movement in ladies' format, with 17 jewels. No battery here: the watch is wound by hand each morning, in a gesture that has become rare. This is what sets this De Ville apart from quartz watches of the same era and gives it its horological interest. The movement of this example has been serviced by our watchmaker and is guaranteed for 1 year.

On the wrist, the piece takes on the character of a de ville jewel. The warm gold plating, compact proportions and dial without indices form a highly restrained dress watch, here highlighted by a black lizard-style leather strap. This strap is not original; it is fitted with a steel pin buckle Buckle. The Lug width of 12 mm, specific to ladies' watches, points replacement strap choices toward narrower widths.

Three points to note

  • The watch is mechanical with hand-wound movement: it must be wound daily to function. It is not a quartz.
  • The covered lugs and the brushed-quadrant dial are the two signatures of the design, characteristic of the De Ville of this generation.
  • The Crystal plexi bears signs of use and the gold plating shows fine marks, consistent with the age of the piece. The plexi can be easily polished by a watchmaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Omega De Ville line?
The De Ville is Omega's line of dress watches. Born in 1967, when the house decided to separate its de ville watches from the Seamaster range, it brings together pieces with a refined and elegant design, intended for dress wear rather than sport. This example is a rectangular feminine version in gold-plated metal, with manual winding.

Is this Omega automatic or quartz?
Neither: it is a mechanical hand-wound watch. Its 1070 caliber, with 17 jewels, must be wound by hand, generally once a day, by turning the crown. There is neither battery nor automatic rotor. It is a now-rare mode of operation, and one of the charms of this piece for lovers of traditional mechanics.

How do you wind a hand-wound watch?
Gently turn the crown clockwise, about fifteen to twenty turns, until you feel resistance. Never force it beyond that. Daily winding, at the same time each day, is enough to keep the watch running and ensures the best regularity.

Is the case solid gold?
No. It is a gold-plated case over a steel back, a technique common on dress watches of this era. The plating brings the warmth and brilliance of gold at a fraction of the price. This piece shows fine signs of wear on the plating, noted with complete transparency.

Is this watch suitable for a small wrist?
Yes, absolutely. With a 20mm case and a 30mm Lug-to-lug, it is a delicately proportioned watch, made for a slender wrist. Its covering lugs, which envelop the bracelet, give it a compact and elegant silhouette. The 12mm Lug width calls for slim straps.
