Omega De Ville steel: the Swiss dress watch of 1971 with a silver dial and hand-wound movement
This Omega watch belongs to the De Ville line, the maison's dress collection, born in 1967 when Omega decided to separate its de ville watches from the Seamaster range. Unisex, it is equally suited to a man or a woman. Its round stainless steel case, with a slender bezel and short, angular lugs, embodies the refined classicism of the early 1970s. It measures 33mm (34mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 35mm and a thickness of only 6.35mm. A piece of great finesse, made to slip under a cuff.
The silver dial reveals a sunray-brushed finish that catches the light with discreet radiance. Twelve faceted applied baton markers punctuate the perimeter, with no numerals or railroad track: the absolute sobriety of the dress watch. The Ω symbol and the OMEGA signature occupy the upper part of the dial, the mention DE VILLE the lower part, with SWISS MADE at the base. Two slender baton hands are all that is needed: no seconds hand, no date, only the hours and minutes.
Inside beats the Omega 625 caliber, a mechanical hand-wound movement, one of Omega's last extra-thin manual calibers before the transition to quartz. Its slim construction is precisely what allows the watch's 6.35mm profile. No battery here: the watch is wound by hand each morning, with a gesture now rare. The polished steel and silver dial form an ensemble of great restraint, here highlighted by a grained light brown leather strap that warms the whole and offers a beautiful vintage contrast. The De Ville is Omega's dress watch line. Gently turn the crown clockwise about twenty turns, until you feel resistance. Never force it beyond that point. Daily winding, at the same time each day, is enough to keep the watch running and ensures the best regularity.
Is a 33mm case suitable for which wrist ?
A 33mm diameter with a Lug-to-lug of 35mm is ideally suited to wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm. It is the classic dress watch format: discreet on a masculine wrist, perfectly proportioned on a feminine wrist.
