Atelier Note

A tuxedo dial since 1947 — the black has held its rank, the silver in the center has frosted over with the years.

A tuxedo on the wrist since 1947

This Omega watch, reference 5371, produced in 1947, features a so-called "tuxedo" dial: a black outer ring, punctuated with patinated luminous Arabic numerals, surrounds a silvered center that eight decades have covered in a frost of patina — an evolution that only time can produce, and that no other example shares. At six o'clock, the azure sub-seconds register displays its concentric guilloché, intact. The steel hands, fitted with their original luminous material, complete the reading.

The steel case, measuring 33.4mm, with its domed bezel and tapered lugs, stands 10mm thick — the classic proportions of the immediate post-war period, wearable today on a daily basis.

The movement is an Omega caliber 30T2, a hand-wound mechanical movement from the 30mm caliber family launched in 1939 — the one that built the house's reputation for precision and whose robustness remains a benchmark among collectors. Its simple construction makes servicing straightforward, with parts still widely available.

The piece is fitted on a smooth black leather strap, fastened with a Buckle steel pin buckle.

Three points to note

01

Two-tone tuxedo dial — the black ring on a frosted silvered center, the dress style of the 1940s in its most graphic expression.

02

Caliber 30T2 — the 30mm family of 1939, the movement that established Omega's reputation for precision.

03

Azure sub-seconds — the concentric guilloché of the register, preserved beneath eight decades of patina.

Frequently asked questions

What is a “tuxedo” dial?
It is a two-tone dial whose outer ring, generally black, surrounds a light-colored center — a composition that evokes a tuxedo, hence its nickname. This graphic style, which appeared on dress watches in the 1930s and 1940s, is now sought after by collectors for its contrast and relative rarity compared with the plain dials of the same period.

Is the dial patina original?
Yes. The dial is original and its patina developed naturally over nearly eight decades: the silvered center has taken on a frosted appearance while the black ring has retained its depth, and the luminous material on the numerals and hands has acquired its cream tone. The whole is fully visible in our photographs.

What is the Omega calibre 30T2?
It is a hand-wound mechanical movement belonging to the 30mm caliber family, launched by Omega in 1939. This family built the house's reputation for precision and ranks among the most respected movements in its production. Its simple and robust construction still makes it easy to service today, with parts remaining widely available.

How should this watch be cared for on a daily basis?
A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for the steel case. The Crystal acrylic crystal marks more easily than a Crystal sapphire crystal, but its scratches can be polished out easily by a watchmaker. As water resistance is not guaranteed, any contact with water should be avoided. For hand-winding, a daily action, preferably at a fixed time, ensures regular timekeeping.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 33.4mm diameter, 40mm Lug-to-lug, and 10mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 18cm. Its format places it in the classic dress watch category, wearable equally by a man or a woman. The 18mm Lug width makes it easy to change the strap.
