Longines extra-thin steel: the Swiss dress watch with brushed silver dial and hand-wound movement
This Longines watch is a dress watch designed for both men and women, signed by one of the oldest Swiss watchmaking houses, founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier. Its round steel case, with a slim bezel and short, angular lugs, embodies the understated classicism of the de ville watch from the 1970s. It measures 33mm (35mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 39mm and a thickness of just 6.3mm. A piece of remarkable finesse, made to slip under a cuff.
The silver dial reveals a vertical brushed finish that catches the light in shifting bands depending on the angle. Twelve painted black Roman numerals encircle it, without the slightest applied index or railway track minute scale: nothing but the outline of the numerals on the metal. Longines' winged hourglass and the name of the house occupy the top of the dial. Two slender baton hands are all that is needed for the display: no seconds hand, no date, only the hours and minutes.
Inside beats the Longines calibre 847, a mechanical hand-wound movement, renowned for its slender profile. It beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers approximately 40 hours of power reserve. It is a movement without a seconds hand by construction, which explains the purity of the dial and allows the 6.3mm profile. There is no battery here: the watch is wound by hand each morning, with a gesture that has become rare. The movement of this example has been révisée by our watchmaker.
On the wrist, this piece wears as a classic women's watch. The brushed steel and silver dial create a restrained tone-on-tone ensemble, here highlighted by a dark brown lizard leather strap. This strap is not original; it is fitted with a Buckle buckle. The Lug width of 16mm leaves the choice of replacement straps open.
Three points to note
- The watch is mechanical and hand-wound: it must be wound daily to function. It is neither automatic nor quartz.
- The 847 calibre is devoid of a seconds hand by construction: the absence of a seconds hand is original, not a missing part.
- The dial shows patina and a few diffuse marks, notably in its lower section, and the steel shows light signs of wear. We prefer to note it rather than embellish it.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Longines automatic or quartz?
Neither: it is a mechanical hand-wound watch. Its 847 calibre must be wound by hand, generally once a day, by turning the crown. There is neither a battery nor an automatic rotor. It beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers approximately 40 hours of power reserve. This is a now rare mode of operation, and one of the attractions of this piece.
How do you wind a manual-wind watch?
Gently turn the crown clockwise, about twenty turns, until you feel resistance. Never force it past that point. Daily winding, at the same time each day, is enough to keep the watch running and ensures the best rate stability.
Why does the watch have no seconds hand?
Because the Longines 847 calibre was designed without a seconds hand. Longines produced two close variants: the 846, fitted with a small seconds, and the 847, intentionally without a seconds gear train. The absence of a hand is therefore original, not a missing part. It is this design choice that gives the dial its purity and the watch its exceptional slenderness.
What does the winged logo on the Longines dial represent?
It is the winged hourglass, Longines' emblem since the end of the 19th century and one of the oldest registered watchmaking trademarks in the world. It marks the piece as belonging to a Swiss house founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, renowned for its dress watches and its history in sports timekeeping.
Is a 33mm case suitable for which wrist size?
A 33mm diameter with a Lug-to-lug of 39mm fits wrists of around 15 to 18.5cm. It is a classic and versatile size: discreet on a masculine wrist, comfortable on a slightly stronger feminine wrist. Its 6.3mm thickness allows it to slip under a shirt cuff without the slightest inconvenience.
