Japanese quartz from the 1970s at the height of its ambition

This Seiko Type II watch, reference 7546-7000, produced in 1977, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 35.6mm steel case that corresponds exactly to the format Seiko reserved for its dress watches of this period. The case middle is cut with facets, alternating brushed surfaces and polished edges, in the formal vocabulary the brand then applied to all its high-end ranges.

The chocolate brown dial features a sunburst satin finish that shifts the tone depending on the angle of the wrist: from deep brown in the shade to an almost orange copper in full light. The applied baton hour markers and faceted hands, both in polished steel, are crafted according to the same codes as those of the mechanical Grand Seiko and King Seiko of the previous decade. The day-date window, at three o’clock, displays the day alternately in English characters and kanji — a signature of pieces intended for the Japanese domestic market.

The 7546 calibre powering it is one of the most accomplished quartz movements of its time. It incorporates two functions that entry-level quartz watches did not offer: independent quickset correction of the day and date, and hacking seconds, which stops the seconds hand when setting the time and allows exact synchronization. The performance highlighted at the time of sale was that originally announced by Seiko; on a piece nearly fifty years old, the observed rate depends on the ageing of the movement and its maintenance.

The Type II range was launched in 1976, at the moment when Seiko was shifting its prestige collections from mechanical to quartz. These watches temporarily took the place left vacant by the mechanical King Seiko and Grand Seiko, with the same level of case and dial finishing. With 40mm of Lug-to-lug and a thickness of 10mm, this one is comfortable for daily wear.

Three points to note

  • Day display in kanji — the window alternates between English and Japanese characters, a marker of a piece produced for the Japanese domestic market.
  • 7546 calibre with hacking seconds — independent quickset correction of the day and date, and stopping of the seconds hand when setting the time, two functions absent from ordinary quartz watches of the period.
  • Finishes inherited from prestigious mechanical ranges — faceted case middle, applied markers and hands executed according to the same codes as the King Seiko of the previous decade.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the day displayed in Japanese characters?

This piece was produced for the Japanese domestic market. Its day disc has two sets of characters, English and kanji, which alternate with each changeover. The crown allows you to scroll through both sets in order to choose the desired display. These watches were not distributed through official channels in Europe, which makes them uncommon on the Western market.

What did the Type II range represent for Seiko?

Launched in 1976, the Type II range arrived at the moment when Seiko was shifting its prestige collections from mechanical to quartz. These watches retained the level of finishing of the mechanical King Seiko and Grand Seiko: faceted case middle, applied indexes and hands, worked dials. Today, they represent a sought-after entry point into quality Japanese quartz.

Does the 7546 calibre offer any particular functions?

Yes. It allows quick and independent correction of the day and date, without turning the hands. It also features a hacking seconds function: pulling the crown stops the seconds hand, allowing the time to be set in synchrony to the exact second. These two functions were not systematic on quartz watches of the period.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?

With a 35.6mm diameter, 40mm of Lug-to-lug, and 10mm thickness, it suits wrists from approximately 15 to 19cm. This is the standard format of late-1970s Japanese dress watches, sufficiently present on a տղամարդնական wrist while remaining wearable for a woman. The steel bracelet is adjustable by removing links.

Is the watch water-resistant?

Water resistance is not guaranteed on a vintage piece. The original gaskets have aged, and we do not carry out pressure tests, which could damage the case. We recommend avoiding any prolonged contact with water, including when washing your hands.
