Atelier Note

White, black, blue — three values beneath a golden oval, and not one more. The jewelry format that the houses abandoned twenty years before returning to it.

A golden baignoire in a jewelry format

This Seiko watch, reference 1F21-5B70, is a feminine piece in a jewelry format: a gold-plated 21mm baignoire-shaped case — an elongated oval on the vertical axis, whose sides curve gently toward the lugs. The 7mm thickness remains restrained, and the very short, curved lugs keep the strap as close to the wrist as possible.

The white dial bears twelve black Arabic numerals in a fine design that follows the curve of the oval. No hour markers, no minute track, no ornament: the numerals alone occupy the entire perimeter. The blued hands, in baton form, stand out with clarity, accompanied by a very fine central seconds hand. A discreet golden emblem appears below the center, the dial's only note of color.

Contrast is the subject of this watch. A pure white dial, black numerals, blued hands, all set within an entirely golden case: only three values, without gradient or intermediate material. It is a design that owes more to jewelry than to watchmaking — the watch is first read as an object worn, before being read as an instrument.

The Seiko 1F21 caliber that drives it is a three-hand quartz movement whose compact dimensions make it possible to house the full running gear within a case of this size. Checked and fitted with a new battery, it runs on one of the most common battery sizes, which makes servicing simple anywhere in the world. The watch is fitted with a later black crocodile-pattern leather strap.

Three points to note

01

21mm jewelry format — a scale that few brands still offer, supported by the return of small watches.

02

Baignoire shape — an elongated oval with curved sides, the classic silhouette of a ladies' watch.

03

Three-value dial — white, black, blue: no gradient, no intermediate material, immediate legibility.

Why choose a vintage Seiko watch?

This vintage Seiko watch holds a precise place among our vintage women's watches : its 21mm size and oval shape place it more in the realm of jewelry than instrumentation, a segment that brands largely abandoned before returning to it in recent years. It can be worn on its own or alongside fine bracelets, without ever overwhelming the wrist — a vintage women's watch from a top-tier manufacture, at a restrained budget.

Like all our vintage quartz watches, this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: verification of the caliber and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands and case. Each vintage watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is meant by a baignoire shape?
The term refers to an elongated oval case, whose sides curve gently toward the lugs, by analogy with the silhouette of a bathtub seen from above. It is a shape term commonly used in watchmaking française, independently of any brand: it describes the geometry of the case and nothing else. This silhouette was long associated with ladies' watches, before returning to favor in recent years.

The dial indicates 1F21-1E20: is that the correct reference?
Yes. At Seiko, the code printed at the bottom of the dial is that of the dial itself, not that of the watch. The reference of the watch is engraved on the case back, here 1F21-5B70: the first group designates the caliber, the second the case. A discrepancy between the two codes is normal and is found on most Seiko.

How should a gold-plated case be cared for?
The plating is a layer of gold applied to a base metal, which thins over time in the areas most exposed to friction. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for routine care; avoid abrasive products, perfumes, and household cleaners, which accelerate wear. On this watch, the signs of wear on the bezel are visible in our photographs.

Is quartz reliable on a watch from this period?
Yes. Seiko calibers from the 1990s are robust and easy to maintain: the battery — in one of the most common sizes in the world — is replaced every two to three years by a watchmaker, without the periodic servicing required by a mechanical movement. This one has been checked, fitted with a new battery, and is guaranteed for one year.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 21mm wide, 33.5mm Lug-to-lug and 7mm thick, it is a jewelry-like format, intended for slim to medium wrists — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. It can be worn alone or paired with slim bracelets, without ever crowding the wrist. The Lug width measures 12mm, which makes it easy to change the strap.
