The last manual-winding three-hand Rolex
This Rolex Oysterdate Precision reference 6694 watch, produced in 1977, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 34mm steel Oyster case that corresponds to the benchmark format of the Swiss dress watch. The bezel is smooth and polished, with no fluting or engraving, which draws the eye to the dial. The caseback is screw-down, as is the crown, in keeping with the Oyster construction that made the maison's reputation.
The silvered dial with vertical satin finishing features applied baton hour markers and steel baton hands. The date window, at three o'clock, is topped by the brand's characteristic Cyclops, which magnifies the display through the domed acrylic Crystal. The T SWISS T marking at six o'clock indicates a tritium dial: the luminous dots have turned cream, and the tips of the hands show the same hue, a patina that nothing can reproduce artificially.
Beneath this dial beats the calibre 1225, a 17-jewel hand-wound mechanical movement, operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and fitted with a Breguet hairspring. The 6694 is the last manual-winding three-hand Rolex: while the maison was shifting the bulk of its production toward automatic movements and chronometer certification, this reference retained the daily gesture of winding the crown until the end of its production.
The word Precision on the dial, rather than Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified, indicates that the calibre was not submitted for chronometric certification. It is this positioning that made the 6694 the entry point into the Rolex universe, produced continuously from the 1960s to the 1980s. With a Lug-to-lug of 42.4mm and a thickness of 10.9mm, it slips effortlessly under a cuff.
Three points to note
- Last manual-winding three-hand Rolex — the 6694 retained crown winding while the rest of the catalogue was moving to automatic movements.
- Patinated tritium dial — the T SWISS T marking and the cream hue of the luminous dots attest to an original dial, never restored.
- Date without quickset — the date is adjusted by rotating the hands through a 24-hour cycle, a particularity of the calibre 1225.
Why choose a vintage Rolex watch?
Buying a vintage Rolex watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a top-tier Swiss manufacture at a budget unrelated to boutique pricing, through pieces whose construction has already proven its durability. The 6694 is a perfect illustration: a pre-owned luxury watch produced for thirty years, with spare parts still available and maintainable by any watchmaker.
This reference holds a special place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 34mm diameter, long considered too small, now corresponds to the most sought-after format on the vintage dress watch market. Worn on leather as it is here, it moves from the office to dinner without change. Worn on an Oyster steel bracelet, it takes on a sportier character.
Like all our vintage mechanical watches , it has been opened and inspected by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Each pre-owned Rolex watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a twelve-month mechanical warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions
How do you set the date on this reference?
The calibre 1225 does not have a quickset date function. To advance the date, the hands must be rotated through a full twenty-four-hour cycle, passing midnight, as many times as necessary. It is slower than a direct-correction system, but this is the original operation and not a defect. Avoid any manipulation between 9 pm and 3 am, the period during which the date-change mechanism is engaged.
What does “Precision” mean rather than “Chronometer”?
Rolex reserved the mention Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified to movements subject to official chronometer certification. The calibre 1225 of this reference was not subject to it, hence the mention Precision. This in no way detracts from its robustness or its quality of manufacture: it is a pricing position, which made the 6694 the entry point into the world of the maison.
What is tritium and what is dial patina?
Tritium is the luminescent material used by Rolex until the mid-1990s, indicated on the dial by the mention T SWISS T. It loses its luminosity over time and takes on a cream to amber hue that no one has managed to imitate convincingly. This patina is therefore an indicator of the dial's authenticity, and one of the first elements collectors examine.
Is a vintage Rolex watch a safe purchase?
It is, provided authenticity has been established. Our watchmakers systematically open the case to verify the calibre and its consistency with the reference, and inspect the dial, hands, and all components. Every pre-owned Rolex watch sold by Atelier Victor comes with an invoice serving as a certificate of authenticity, a twelve-month mechanical warranty, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.
Does hand-winding require any particular care?
Above all, it requires a habit: a few turns of the crown each morning are enough, until you feel a slight resistance that should not be forced. A watch worn daily is wound at the same time of day, establishing a regular rhythm. A service every five to seven years remains recommended, as with any vintage mechanical watch.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34mm diameter, 42.4mm of Lug-to-lug, and a thickness of 10.9mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm. This was the standard format for the dress watch in the 1960s and 1970s, and it is very much back in favour today. It can be worn equally well by a man or a woman.
