A midnight blue dial strewn like a constellation across four and a half millimetres of gold
This Piaget Protocole watch, reference 91542, produced in the 1970s, is distinguished first and foremost by its dial. Against a midnight blue sunburst satin-finished background, a constellation of light points is spread across the entire surface, denser in the upper half. This appearance results from the ageing of the lacquer over the past fifty years: it was not intended at the time of manufacture, and no two examples display it in exactly the same way. The effect evokes a starry sky, and that is what gives this piece its character.
The dial bears neither markers nor numerals. Only the PIAGET signature below twelve, the word SWISS at the bottom, and the gold dauphine hands. The time is read solely by the position of the hands on an entirely bare surface — an aesthetic choice few houses embrace, and which here leaves all the space to the blue and its light points.
The case is rectangular, 25mm, in 18-carat yellow gold, with all four corners cut on a bevel. Its total thickness is 4.5mm, including the case. This slimness is due to the 9P2 calibre, which measures 2.15 millimetres and comprises 86 components: it is the evolution of the 9P launched in 1957, presented upon its release as the thinnest hand-wound mechanical movement in the world. It is this movement that made Piaget the benchmark for ultra-thin watchmaking.
The crown is set with a dark stone cabochon, a design detail Piaget applied to its dress lines. The Buckle pin buckle is in 18-carat yellow gold and signed Piaget — an element these watches often lose over the course of strap changes, and one that is difficult to replace.

Condition and guarantee
- Overall condition: The dial is original and has never been restored. Its blue lacquer has evolved over time and shows light speckling spread across the entire surface, denser in the upper half and on the right side, fully visible in our photographs. The sunburst satin finish remains visible, and the dauphine hands and signature are intact. The 18-carat gold case shows noticeable wear scratches on the bezel and sides, gold being a soft metal. The Crystal is in good condition (8/10).

Where does the dial's starry appearance come from?
From the aging of the lacquer. On lacquered dials from the 1970s, the varnish layer lifts in places over the decades and reveals light specks. This was not intended at the time of manufacture: it is the result of time, and each dial evolves differently, so no two examples are identical. Against this midnight blue background, the effect evokes a starry sky. We point this out plainly rather than presenting it as an original finish: the dial is authentic and has never been restored, and the price of the piece reflects this.
What is the 9P2 calibre?
It is a hand-wound mechanical movement 2.15 millimeters thick, comprising 86 components. It derives from the 9P launched by Piaget in 1957, which measured 2mm and was presented as the thinnest hand-wound mechanical movement in the world. The 9P2 gains one and a half tenths of a millimeter for greater robustness and introduces a micrometric screw for rate adjustment. It is this caliber that established Piaget as a reference in ultra-thin watchmaking.
What is the Protocole line?
Protocole refers to one of Piaget's dress lines, characterized by a rectangular case with cut corners in precious metal and by the maison's ultra-thin calibers. How should an 18-carat gold case be cared for?
18-carat gold is a soft metal that scratches easily, which explains the marks borne by this case after fifty years. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for routine care. Polishing is possible with a watchmaker, but it removes material and gradually softens the sharp edges of the cut corners, which define the design of this reference. We have left the piece in its current condition.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 25mm wide, 27.5mm Lug-to-lug and 4.5mm thick, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 18cm. Its compact format and exceptional thinness place it firmly in the dress category, and it may be worn equally by a man or a woman. The Lug width measures 17mm, making it easy to change the strap.
