Piaget: The Master of Ultra-Thin and Solid Gold
Since its founding in 1874, Piaget has cultivated a unique identity in the Swiss watchmaking landscape. By making the radical choice to work almost exclusively with precious metals (18-carat gold and platinum), the manufacture in La Côte-aux-Fées erased the boundary between watch and jewelry. Its legendary ultra-thin calibers freed designers' creativity, giving rise to silhouettes of absolute elegance.
The Pillars of the Piaget Vintage Collection
Altiplano: The Quest for the Infinitesimal
- Caliber 9P (1957): A hand-wound movement only 2mm thick.
- Caliber 12P (1960): The flattest automatic movement with a micro-rotor in the world at its release (2.3mm).
- Aesthetic: Absolute minimalism, designed to slide perfectly under a shirt cuff.
Polo: The Jet-Set Icon
Launched in 1979, the Polo is Piaget's response to the sport-chic trend. Entirely sculpted in solid gold, from the case to the integrated bracelet, it often weighs more than 100 grams. It is the symbol of the unabashed luxury of the 1980s.
Hard Stone Dials: The Artistic Signature
Piaget has mastered the art of crafting dials from natural stones. The Lapis-lazuli (deep blue speckled with golden pyrite), Onyx, Jade, or Malachite make each watch rigorously unique.
Expertise and Guarantee Atelier Victor
Acquiring a vintage Piaget requires special attention. Ultra-thin movements are inherently more delicate than sports calibers, and hard stone dials tolerate no shock. At Atelier Victor, we assess each component, from the dial's integrity to the purity of the gold. Each watch is serviced by our expert watchmakers and benefits from a one-year mechanical warranty as well as a lifetime authenticity guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions — Vintage Piaget Watches
Why do vintage Piaget watches have a "floor value"?
Because they are almost exclusively made of solid 18-carat gold. A Piaget Polo, for example, contains a very large amount of gold in its integrated bracelet. The precious metal's value at the current rate thus constitutes a minimum intrinsic value for the watch.
Can a scratched gold Piaget be polished?
Yes, gold polishes very well. However, on vintage models (notably textured bracelets or brushed finishes), we recommend an extremely light polishing to preserve the original angles and the historical patina of the jewelry.
Are ultra-thin movements reliable?
Yes, they are masterpieces of micromechanics. However, due to the extremely fine tolerances between components, they are more sensitive to severe shocks and require regular servicing (every 4 to 5 years) by qualified watchmakers.
