A 1952 bumper automatic

This Omega watch, reference 2658-3, produced in 1952, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 34.3mm steel case whose spider lugs define the entire silhouette: faceted, curved toward the wrist, and detached from the case middle, they extend the watch to 40.9mm Lug-to-lug. It is a design that collectors immediately recognize on this reference.

Beneath the dial beats a calibre 342, bumper automatic — a bumper. Unlike a rotor that turns freely through three hundred and sixty degrees, the weight of this movement oscillates over a limited arc and comes up against two springs at the end of its travel. The wearer then feels a slight tapping on the wrist with each movement of the arm, a sensation no contemporary watch produces anymore. The calibre has 17 jewels, Incabloc protection, and offers forty-two hours of power reserve.

The light dial features applied dagger-shaped hour markers, along with applied Arabic numerals at the four cardinal points. The sub-seconds register, at six o’clock, is recessed with a slight step and engine-turned with concentric circles, which clearly distinguishes it from the main surface. The dauphine hands, broad and faceted, complete the ensemble. Only two inscriptions: OMEGA beneath the Ω symbol, with AUTOMATIC below.

This dial is original and has never been refinished. As such, it bears the marks of its seventy-three years, described in detail in the Condition section. This is the choice we make systematically: a restored dial offers a uniform surface but loses its collector’s appeal and the finesse of its original printing.

Three points to note

  • Bumper automatic — the calibre 342 bumper, whose weight oscillates over a limited arc and comes up against springs, with the characteristic tapping on the wrist.
  • Spider lugs — faceted, curved, and detached from the case middle, they form the visual signature of reference 2658.
  • Original dial never refinished — it bears the marks of its age, described without reservation, exactly what collectors attached to integrity seek.

Why choose a vintage Omega watch?

Buying a vintage Omega watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a historic Swiss manufacture at a budget unrelated to the boutique, through pieces whose construction has already endured seven decades. Bumper calibres are among the best-documented vintage mechanical watches: more than one million three hundred thousand examples of this movement were produced between 1943 and 1955, and spare parts remain accessible.

This reference occupies a precise place among vintage men’s and women’s watches: its 34.3mm diameter makes it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally by both. The bumper, a technology abandoned as early as the mid-1950s in favor of the central rotor, is now sought after precisely for its period character.

Like all our vintage mechanical watches , this one has been opened and inspected by our watchmakers: verification of the movement and its consistency with the reference, verification of the serial number, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Each vintage luxury watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a twelve-month mechanical warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bumper movement?
It is an automatic winding system in which the oscillating weight does not rotate freely through three hundred and sixty degrees, but instead travels across a limited arc before striking two springs positioned at the end of its path. The wearer then feels a slight tapping on the wrist with each movement of the arm. Omega used this architecture from 1943 to 1955 before switching to the central rotor. No contemporary watch produces this sensation, and today it is precisely what collectors seek in these calibres.

What condition is the dial in?
It is original and has never been refinished, which explains the marks it bears: dense spotting across the entire surface and brown stains on the lower part and along the left edge, all visible in our photographs. The sub-seconds register has remained clean. We describe it precisely because it is the determining element for a buyer. A significant number of collectors prefer a marked original dial to a uniformly restored dial, and the price of this piece reflects that.

Is a bumper reliable for daily wear?
Yes. The calibre 342 was produced in more than one million three hundred thousand examples between 1943 and 1955, making it one of the maison's best-documented movements. It has 17 jewels, Incabloc shock protection, and offers a power reserve of forty-two hours. Spare parts remain accessible, and any watchmaker accustomed to vintage watches knows how to service it.

What are spider lugs?
The term refers to faceted lugs, curved toward the wrist and set apart from the case middle rather than blended into its mass. They create a gap between the case and the strap attachment, which visually lightens the watch and elongates it on the wrist. It is a characteristic design of Omega dress watches from the early 1950s, and the visual signature of reference 2658.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a diameter of 34.3mm, 40.9mm of Lug-to-lug, and a thickness of 9.9mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm. This was the standard format for the dress watch of the early 1950s, and today it has largely returned to favour. The Lug width measures 18mm.
