A dial shaped by sixty years alone
This Omega Seamaster 30 Watch reference 135.003, produced in 1962, wears equally well on a man or a woman, with a 34.5mm gold-plated case matching the format of the Swiss dress watch of that decade. The lugs are long and tapered, slightly curved toward the wrist, which gives the piece a stronger presence than its diameter would suggest. The caseback is steel, the crown golden and fluted.
The dial is the element that defines this watch. It has turned tropical: over sixty years, its light surface has transformed into a range of tones from cream to orangey copper, in irregular patches of which none repeats exactly from one example to another. This evolution results from the slow oxidation of the lacquer and its prolonged exposure to light. It cannot be artificially reproduced, and that is precisely what gives tropical dials their value in the eyes of collectors.
The display remains pared back: applied golden baton hour markers, four openworked Arabic numerals at the cardinal points, two baton hands, and a central seconds hand. The Seamaster 30 signature appears in cursive script beneath the Omega logo, with the words SWISS MADE at six o'clock. No aperture, no complication, no superfluous indication — the restraint of the design leaves full space for the transformation of the dial.
Beneath this dial beats the Omega calibre 286, a 17-jewel hand-wound manufacture movement running at 18,000 vibrations per hour. It belongs to the family of 30mm-diameter calibres, designed according to a principle of optimal proportions: maximize the barrel and balance wheel diameter within the available space, minimize escapement friction. This architecture earned Omega a reputation for chronometric performance that endured for decades. With 42mm of Lug-to-lug, this piece can be worn daily without difficulty.
Three points to note
- Tropical dial — the transformation cannot be reproduced and makes this example a piece without equal, sought after for that very reason.
- Manufacture calibre 286 — the central seconds version of the 30mm calibre family, the one that built Omega's chronometric reputation.
- Seamaster without being a diving watch — the “30” refers to the diameter of the calibre, not to water resistance of 30 metres.
Why choose a vintage Omega watch?
Buying a vintage Omega watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a historic Swiss manufacture at a budget unrelated to the boutique, through pieces whose construction has already endured six decades. The manual calibres of the 30mm family are among the easiest vintage mechanical watches to maintain: their architecture is documented, and spare parts remain accessible.
The Seamaster 30 holds a precise place among vintage watches for men and women: its 34.5mm diameter and restrained design make it a vintage dress watch that moves from office to dinner without change, wearable equally by both. A tropical dial shifts it from catalogue model to a full-fledged collector's watch.
Like all our pre-owned Omega watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Each vintage luxury watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a twelve-month mechanical warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions
What is a tropical dial?
The term refers to a dial whose original shade has changed over the decades under the combined effect of light and oxidation of the protective varnish. The result ranges from warm brown to coppery nuances, in a uniform surface or in irregular patches depending on the history of the piece. This phenomenon cannot be convincingly reproduced artificially, which explains the value of tropical dials among collectors.
What does the “30” in Seamaster 30 mean?
Contrary to a widespread belief, it does not indicate water resistance to thirty metres. It refers to the family of 30mm-diameter calibres that powers the model. The Seamaster 30 is therefore not a diving watch but a dress watch, despite the line’s name. This confusion is the question most frequently asked about this model.
What is calibre 286?
It is the central seconds version of the 30mm calibre family developed by Omega, a 17-jewel hand-wound movement beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. Its architecture prioritised a large barrel and a balance of substantial diameter within the available space, a principle that earned these calibres a reputation for lasting regularity. Version 269 of the same movement featured a small seconds at six o’clock, on other references.
Is a vintage Omega watch a safe purchase?
It is, provided that authenticity has been established and the condition is described without reservation. Our watchmakers systematically open the case to verify the calibre and its consistency with the reference, and inspect the dial, hands, and all components. Every pre-owned Omega watch sold by Atelier Victor comes with an invoice serving as a certificate of authenticity, a twelve-month mechanical warranty, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 34.5mm diameter, 42mm Lug-to-lug, and 10.8mm thickness, it suits wrists measuring approximately 15 to 19cm. Its long, slender lugs give it a stronger presence than its diameter might suggest. It is the standard format of the dress watch of the 1960s, now very much back in favour.
