Atelier Note

The Roman numerals have left the dial to be engraved into the steel of the bezel — the 21, designed in 1989 for the coming century, worn today as a matter of course.

A Must 21, Roman numerals engraved in the bezel

This Cartier watch is a Must by Cartier 21, reference 1340, produced in the 1990s. Launched in 1989, the 21 — for the twenty-first century that was on the horizon — took the opposite approach to all Must: no more vermeil, no more gold. Entirely steel, polished and brushed, and a design idea that has remained unique in the house’s history.

That idea: moving the Roman numerals from the dial to the bezel, where they are engraved into the steel in a ring — the time is read astride the case and the dial. At the center, a sunburst silver disc encircled by a minute track bears only the signature must de Cartier and two blued steel hands. The crown retains its cabochon, the hallmark Cartier touch.

The original steel bracelet, with articulated rounded links, extends the 28mm case with the suppleness of a chain bracelet and fastens at approximately 15.5cm — a complete period ensemble.

The quartz movement has been checked and is guaranteed for one year. At 5.3mm thick, the watch wears like a bracelet — which was exactly the intention in 1989.

Three points to note

01

Roman numerals engraved in the bezel — the founding idea of the 21, unique in the history of Must.

02

Entirely steel — the first Must without gold or vermeil, original case and bracelet in a single design.

03

5.3mm thick — a wristwatch in the literal sense, including blued hands and cabochon.

Why choose a vintage Must by Cartier?

This pre-owned Cartier watch holds a distinct place among our vintage women’s watches: the 21 is the Must you wear every day without thinking about it — steel fears nothing, the 28mm format dresses the wrist without encumbering it, and its 1990s design has returned to the forefront of contemporary taste. It is the most modern entry into Cartier’s most accessible collection.

Like all our pre-owned luxury watches, this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: verification of the movement, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Each vintage Cartier watch that we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and guaranteed lifetime authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Cartier Must 21?
It is the line that Cartier launched in 1989, named for the approaching twenty-first century. It marked a departure from the Must models in vermeil: entirely in steel, with the Roman numerals moved from the dial to the bezel, engraved into the metal. Conceived as the everyday Cartier for a new generation, it is now one of the house's most sought-after 1990s designs.

Why are the numerals on the bezel?
It is the founding idea of the design: by engraving the Roman numerals into the steel bezel, Cartier completely frees the dial — reduced to a sunburst disc and two blued hands — and turns time-reading into a gesture that passes through the case. No other line from the house adopted this principle, which makes the 21 instantly recognizable.

Can the bracelet be adjusted to my size?
It closes at approximately 15.5cm wrist size as is. Links can be removed by a watchmaker for a smaller wrist; to enlarge it, compatible links may be sourced — let us know your wrist size before purchase and we will confirm what is possible.

Is quartz reliable on a watch from this period?
Yes. The quartz calibres of Must from Cartier are robust and easy to maintain: the battery is changed every two to three years by a watchmaker, with no periodic servicing as on a mechanical watch. This one has been checked and is guaranteed for one year.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or large wrist?
With a 28mm diameter, 31mm Lug-to-lug, and 5.3mm thickness, it is intended for slim to medium wrists, the bracelet closing at approximately 15.5cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its integrated lugs keep it close to the wrist, and its slimness makes it wear like a bracelet.
