Omega 2495: a calibre from the 30 mm family, in steel
This Omega watch bears the reference 2495 and dates from 1947. Its round steel case measures 33.5mm in diameter and 9.1mm thick, and it is powered by the Omega calibre 265, hand-wound, with a sub-seconds at six o'clock.
The case is that of a post-war dress watch: a thin polished bezel, a straight caseband, and faceted lugs cut with sharp angles that catch the light on their edges. The fluted steel crown is original. From Lug-to-lug, the watch measures 40.7mm, which makes it wear slightly larger than its diameter would suggest.
The light dial is built on an alternation: five applied Arabic numerals at twelve, two, four, eight and ten o'clock, and faceted baton markers at the remaining hours, all surrounded by a hash minute track. At six o'clock, a guilloché sub-seconds counter with concentric circles, whose texture contrasts with the smooth background. Below twelve, the Ω symbol followed by the OMEGA signature. The background has taken on a cream tone and bears oxidation marks on its right half, detailed in the Overall condition bullet point.
The hands are polished steel, leaf-shaped, long and slender, accompanied by a fine hand in the counter. The movement was serviced in 2023 and carries a 1-year guarantee.

Condition and guarantee
- Overall condition: Well preserved for a piece from 1947. The dial is original and has never been refinished: the background has taken on a cream tone and shows clearly visible oxidation marks on its right half, between one o'clock and five o'clock, as well as fine spotting distributed elsewhere. The applied numerals, markers and hands show no alteration, and the sub-seconds register remains crisp. Acrylic Crystal in good condition (9/10). The steel case shows surface scratches from wear, more visible on the lugs and around the bezel. The whole is visible in our photographs.

What is the Omega 265 calibre?
It is a hand-wound mechanical movement produced from 1939 to 1963, belonging to the so-called 30 mm family, named after its diameter. It has 15 jewels, beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour, and offers around 43 hours of power reserve once wound. Within this family, the 265 is the antimagnetic 15-jewel variant, without chronometer certification.
What does reference 2495 mean?
It is the case reference, the one Omega assigns to a given case design and which is found engraved inside the caseback. It says nothing about the movement, indicated separately — here calibre 265 — nor about the dial. The same reference can therefore exist with several dials, and the same case can house different calibres.
Is this watch a military watch?
No. No military marking appears on this piece, and without an attested engraving we never describe a watch as military. The confusion comes from the movement family: 30 mm calibres equipped watches supplied to British forces during the Second World War, but those bear specific service markings on the back of the case. This one is a civilian watch.
Is a patinated dial better than a redone dial?
That depends on what one is looking for. A redone dial is more legible and looks cleaner; an original dial, even marked, preserves the period material and printing, which the collector market values more highly and which can never be recovered once the dial has been repainted. This one is original, with the oxidation that eighty years imply.
How does a 33.5mm case wear?
It is the normal size for a men's watch in the 1940s, and it is returning to favour. With 40.7mm of Lug-to-lug and 9.1mm thickness, it suits wrists of around 15 to 18cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its faceted lugs slightly broaden its presence on the wrist.
