Atelier Note
A porcelain-white dial, painted numerals, a hand that counts the days in a fan-shaped display at nine o'clock, and beneath the caseback two superimposed springs, one metre fifty-five uncoiled: the first wristwatch to indicate an eight-day power reserve, launched in 1997.
An Eberhard & Co 8 Jours reference 21017, the 1997 eight-day power reserve model in steel
This Eberhard & Co 8 Jours, reference 21017, is the watch with which the La Chaux-de-Fonds house, founded in 1887 by Georges-Émile Eberhard, made a name for itself in 1997: an eight-day power reserve wristwatch, the first to display it on the dial. The principle comes from eight-day pocket watches, too thick for the wrist; Eberhard resolved this with a patented system, two superimposed springs, 0.30 and 1.25 metres, one metre fifty-five of spring in total, housed in an E&Co 896 calibre built on a Peseux 7001 base, hand-wound. The power reserve indicator, graduated from 0 to 8 days, occupies nine o'clock; the sub-seconds, six o'clock. A watch produced between the late 1990s and the 2000s, in 39.5mm steel, with its original strap and Buckle.
Its original white dial has the clarity of porcelain: twelve painted black Arabic numerals, with an antique design, a fine minute track, the signature Eberhard & Co, Suisse beneath 12, 8 Jours at three o'clock. At nine o'clock, the fan-shaped power reserve display, graduated in days from 0 to 8, whose hand moves back down as the week goes by; at six o'clock, the sub-seconds register marked every 15 units. Two original black Breguet hands, with open-tipped pomme ends.
The steel 39.5mm case, 45.3mm Lug-to-lug and 11.3mm thick, features a domed polished bezel, straight lugs, an original fluted crown and a sapphire Crystal; the steel caseback reveals through a porthole the bridge of the large barrel, openworked in the shape of an 8. The movement has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted with its original strap in black crocodile leather, with its original steel pin Buckle.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Eberhard & Co 8 Jours?
A watch launched in 1997, the first wristwatch to display an eight-day power reserve. Eberhard took the idea of eight-day pocket watches and adapted it to the wrist thanks to a patented system: two superimposed springs, measuring 0.30 and 1.25 metres, in an E&Co 896 calibre built on a Peseux 7001 base. The hand in the fan-shaped display at nine o’clock indicates the remaining days of running time, from 8 to 0.
How is it wound?
By the crown, like any hand-wound watch, but once a week is enough: when fully wound, the watch runs for eight days. The indicator drops day by day; winding is done without forcing, until resistance is felt.
Who is Eberhard & Co?
A house founded in 1887 in La Chaux-de-Fonds by Georges-Émile Eberhard, which became at the beginning of the 20th century one of the great Swiss manufactures, known for its chronographs, then for the 8 Jours in 1997 and the Chrono 4 with four aligned counters in 2001. It still exists in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 39.5mm diameter, 45.3mm of Lug-to-lug and 11.3mm thickness, it suits wrists from approximately 16 to 20cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its domed bezel and straight lugs give it a real presence on the wrist. The Lug width measures 17mm.
