Atelier Note

The 1917 design in steel on steel — the Tank Solo, which Cartier has removed from its catalogue, and which wears on the wrist like one link more.

A steel Tank Solo, the 1917 design for everyday wear

This Cartier watch is a Tank Solo, reference 3170 — the contemporary interpretation of the design Louis Cartier created in 1917, inspired by Renault tanks seen from above: the vertical brancards gripping the strap, the rectangular dial, the geometry without ornament. Launched in 2004 as the entry point to the Tank family, the Solo was removed from the catalogue by Cartier, replaced by the Tank Must — which now makes it a discontinued reference.

The silvered opaline dial displays all the house codes: elongated black Roman numerals stretching into the corners, the central railway minute track, the secret signature slipped into the Roman numeral at ten o'clock, and blued steel sword hands. The beaded crown bears its blue synthetic spinel — the requisite touch of colour.

The steel-on-steel configuration is what sets this example apart: the original Cartier bracelet with brushed flat links, closed by an invisible Buckle folding clasp, extends the case in a single gesture and makes the Tank an everyday piece — more robust and more versatile than leather-mounted versions. It can be adjusted up to 17.5cm by removing links.

The 24.5 x 31mm format with 5.6mm thickness can be worn by both men and women — the intermediate size in the line. The Swiss quartz movement has been checked and fitted with a new battery; it is guaranteed for one year. The watch has been polished in the past and presents in near-new condition.

Three points to note

01

Reference removed from the catalogue — the Tank Solo is no longer produced by Cartier, replaced by the Tank Must.

02

Steel on steel — the original Cartier bracelet with invisible folding clasp, the Tank in its everyday version.

03

Near-new condition — polished in the past, Crystal sapphire, ready to wear.

Why choose a pre-owned Cartier Tank?

This pre-owned Cartier watch holds a precise place among our pieces: the Tank is the oldest design still in continuous production in watchmaking — more than a hundred years of an unchanged rectangle — and the Solo steel on steel is its most accessible and most everyday version. Since its withdrawal from the catalogue, it has existed only on the pre-owned market: the pre-owned route is the only path to this configuration.

Like all our pre-owned luxury watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: verification of the movement, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every Cartier watch that we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and authenticity guaranteed for life.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Cartier Tank?
It is the design Louis Cartier created in 1917, inspired by Renault tanks seen from above: a rectangle with vertical brancards, which became one of the most recognizable watches ever produced. Worn by a century of public figures, the Tank has never left the house's catalogue — only its variations have succeeded one another. The Solo was its entry-level version from 2004 until its discontinuation, replaced by the Tank Must.

Why is the Tank Solo no longer produced?
Cartier removed the Solo from its catalogue to replace it with the Tank Must, as part of a repositioning of its range. The consequence for the buyer is simple: the Solo now exists only on the pre-owned market, and the steel configuration on a steel bracelet, the most sought-after for everyday wear, is becoming scarcer. A discontinued reference of a century-old design is rarely a poor choice.

Can the bracelet be adjusted to my size?
Yes: the original steel bracelet can be adjusted by removing links for a wrist size of up to 17.5cm maximum. Let us know your wrist size before purchase — we deliver the watch ready to wear, and the removed links are supplied to you with the piece.

What does the crown bear?
A synthetic blue spinel — the stone that Cartier sets on the crowns of its steel lines, echoing the sapphire of its high-end collections. It has been a house signature for a century: the touch of blue on the side of the case, which here mirrors the blued hands on the dial.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
At 24.5mm wide, 31mm Lug-to-lug, and 5.6mm thick, it suits wrists of approximately 14.5 to 17.5cm, with the bracelet adjustable by removing links — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. It is the intermediate size of the line, worn by both: the Tank is read in height on the wrist, not in width.
