Atelier Note
Drops of gold and steel braided to an oval of sixteen millimetres, a stone set at twelve o’clock — the entire watch carries the weight of a bracelet.
A Citizen cocktail watch, between jewellery and time
This Citizen watch is a cocktail watch from the 1990s, signed chère — one of the jewellery lines that Citizen reserved for its Japanese market. The principle of these watches: time recedes behind the object, and the object is first and foremost a bracelet. Here, twisted teardrop links, half gold and half steel, openworked at their centre, follow one another to a case that seems to be nothing more than one link more.
The oval case, in mirror-polished steel, measures 16mm wide and 4.8mm thick. Its sunburst golden dial bears raised golden dot hour markers, the chère signature in lowercase — and, at twelve o’clock, a set white stone in a carrée setting, the only sparkle across the surface. Two golden baton hands are enough to tell the time.
The original two-tone bracelet closes at 16.5cm: its teardrops alternate gold and steel in a spiral, so that on the wrist the watch changes appearance with the slightest movement — now golden, now white, never fixed. The design is what makes the entire piece, and it is complete, period-correct.
The movement is a Citizen quartz calibre 2200, with two hands, checked and fitted with a new battery. This watch was produced for the Japanese market: this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market.
Three points to note
01
An original jewellery bracelet — twisted gold and steel teardrops, openworked, that change appearance with the movement of the wrist.
02
White stone set at twelve o’clock — the sole sparkle on a sunburst golden dial with dot hour markers.
03
A jewellery format — 16mm case, 4.8mm thick: the watch is worn like a chain.
Why choose a vintage cocktail watch?
This vintage Citizen watch holds a precise place among our vintage women’s watches: it is a cocktail watch, the kind worn as evening jewellery as much as an everyday signature — and that Japanese houses produced with a jeweller’s care, at prices unrelated to their Swiss equivalents. No current production revisits this register.
Like all our vintage quartz watches , this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: verification of the movement, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and lifetime guaranteed authenticity.

Frequently asked questions
What is a cocktail watch?
It is a watch conceived first and foremost as a piece of jewelry: born in the 1920s to accompany evening attire, it favors the bracelet, small format and brilliance over legibility. Japanese houses produced remarkable examples in the 1980s and 1990s, with a jeweler's care devoted to the links and dials. This one is a typical example: the watch blends into its bracelet.
Is the stone at 12 o'clock a diamond?
We describe it as a set white stone, without certifying its nature: we never identify a stone without gemological proof, even when the manufacturer's practices suggest it. It is in place, securely set in its carrée setting, and fulfills its role: catching the light at the top of the dial.
What is the chère signature?
It is the name of one of the jewelry lines that Citizen reserved for its Japanese market, never distributed in Europe. These feminine lines, produced with the house's finest calibres, rarely circulate outside Japan — this is what collectors refer to as JDM, Japanese Domestic Market. The lowercase signature, printed beneath twelve o’clock, is their hallmark.
How should this two-tone bracelet be cared for?
A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for routine care; avoid perfumes, creams, and household products, which dull gold-tone surfaces. The twisted drops alternate gold and steel: their shine is revived with a simple wipe, and their articulation requires no particular maintenance. The bracelet closes at 16.5 cm.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With its original bracelet closing at 16.5 cm, it is intended for wrists of approximately 14 to 16 cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they please. Its 16 mm case and 4.8 mm thickness make it more of a wrist jewel than a watch in the classic sense, to be worn alone or among other bracelets.
