Atelier Note

A deep chocolate tone beneath a domed Crystal, twelve hour markers that retain a little light, an orange seconds hand running through it all like a matchstick, and a date at three o'clock: the 1970s are contained within one dial.

Vintage Ziegler Automatic Watch from the 1970s, Gold-Plated with Chocolate Dial and Date

This vintage Ziegler watch bears a discreet signature: Ziegler is one of those small Swiss établisseurs from the 1960s and 1970s, those assembly workshops of which the country then counted hundreds, buying their movements from ébauche manufacturers, their cases and dials from other specialists, and signing the whole under their own name. The dial states the essentials, Incabloc and Automatic: a Swiss automatic movement, protected against shocks, with a date. And the design is that of its decade, a gold-plated case with faceted lugs, a chocolate dial, an orange seconds hand.

Its original chocolate dial defines its color: a deep, even brown, which the domed acrylic Crystal deepens and illuminates depending on the angle. Twelve applied baton hour markers, doubled at twelve o'clock, bear their patinated luminous material, a golden minute track surrounds them, and two original golden baton hands with luminous inserts tell the time. The orange seconds hand stands out against the brown, and at three o'clock opens the date window. The Ziegler signature in cursive below 12, Incabloc and Automatic above six o'clock.

The gold-plated 34.3mm case, 42.8mm Lug-to-lug and 11.3mm thick, features a polished bezel on a satin-brushed case middle with faceted lugs, with a steel caseback and a domed acrylic Crystal; the fluted crown, in steel, was replaced during the watch's lifetime. The automatic mechanical movement, with Incabloc shock protection, has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted with a brown crocodile-style leather strap with steel Buckle, both later additions.

Three points to note

01

Chocolate dial and orange seconds hand — the seventies palette, beneath a domed Crystal.

02

Automatic with date — wound by the movement of the wrist, Incabloc, window at three o'clock.

03

Gold-plated 34.3mm — faceted lugs, luminous hour markers, for him as for her.

Why choose a vintage automatic watch?

This vintage Ziegler watch holds a distinct place among vintage men’s and women’s watches: its 34.3mm size can be worn equally by either, and it offers the practicality of an automatic date watch within the full design language of the 1970s, with its chocolate dial, orange seconds hand, and gold-plated case, chosen more for its design than for its signature. An everyday vintage automatic watch, at an entry-level budget for authentic vintage.

Like all our vintage automatic watches, this one has been opened and checked by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an invoice Atelier Victor serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and authenticity guaranteed for life.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Ziegler?
A small Swiss établisseur of the 1960s and 1970s, unknown to the books: Switzerland counted hundreds of them at the time, buying their movements from ébauche makers, their cases and dials from other specialists, and signing the whole with their own name. The dial of this one bears what these workshops had best to say: Incabloc, Automatic. It is chosen for its design, not for its signature.

How does an automatic watch work?
An oscillating weight, the rotor, turns with the movements of the wrist and winds the mainspring: when worn every day, the watch does not need to be wound with the crown. After a few days stopped, a few turns of the crown will set it going again. An automatic movement is adjusted and maintained like a hand-wound movement.

What does Incabloc mean?
It is the name of the shock absorber that protects the balance staff against shocks, adopted by most Swiss watches since the 1950s. Its presence is indicated on the dial.

Has the movement been checked?
Yes. Our partner watchmakers have checked the movement, the dial, the hands and the case; it is guaranteed for one year. A vintage watch is not guaranteed water-resistant.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a diameter of 34.3mm, 42.8mm of Lug-to-lug and a thickness of 11.3mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 19cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its sculpted lugs give it on the wrist the presence of a larger watch. The Lug width measures 18mm, which makes it easy to change the strap.
