A vintage Zédon watch with triple calendar, the full calendar of the 1960s
This vintage Zédon watch brings together on a single dial what is known as a triple calendar, or full calendar: the day and the month in two apertures below twelve o’clock, in French, and the date read by a central hand with a red arrow on the 1 to 31 scale around the outer edge. A complication found in the great houses of the post-war era, and which a Swiss calibre by A. Schild, in Grenchen, made accessible to more modest brands in the 1950s and 1960s. The dial states it, Swiss ébauche: the movement is Swiss, the watch was assembled outside Switzerland, generally in France, and its day and month discs are in French.
Its silvered dial arranges three readings without becoming crowded: six applied golden Arabic numerals at the even hours, six pointed markers at the odd hours, a dotted minute track and, around the outer edge, the 31-day scale in fine numerals. The golden dauphine hands tell the time, a red seconds hand the seconds, and the dark date hand with a red arrow indicates the date. Beneath the Zédon signature, the apertures; above six o’clock, Swiss ébauche and Incabloc.
The gold-plated 33mm case, 39.6mm Lug-to-lug and 10.9mm thick, contains the complication in a de ville watch format, with a steel caseback, faceted lugs and an original golden crown; the calendar correctors are set into the caseband, at two and four o’clock. The A. Schild 1380 calibre, a 17-jewel hand-wound mechanical movement, has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted on a black leather strap with Buckle pin buckle, both later additions.

What is a triple calendar?
A watch that displays, in addition to the time, the three calendar indications: the day of the week, the month, and the date. Here, the day and month appear in two apertures below 12 o'clock, in French, and the date is indicated by a central hand with a red arrow pointing to the scale from 1 to 31 printed around the edge of the dial. The calendar does not account for months with fewer than 31 days: it must be corrected by hand, five times a year.
How is the calendar set?
The A. Schild 1380 calibre features two correctors in the caseband: at four o'clock for the date, at two o'clock for the month. The day has no corrector; it advances by moving the hands past midnight. The correctors are operated with a fine point, outside the hours when the calendar is engaged, around midnight.
What does "Ébauche suisse" mean on the dial?
It means the movement is Swiss, an ébauche being a movement supplied by a specialist manufacturer, here A. Schild in Grenchen, and that the watch was assembled outside Switzerland, most often in France. For these watches, common in the 1950s and 1960s, this wording served in place of Swiss Made.
What is the A. Schild 1380 calibre?
A 17-jewel hand-wound mechanical movement manufactured by A. Schild in Grenchen, one of the major Swiss ébauche manufacturers of the 20th century. The 1380 is the complete calendar version of a family derived from the calibre 1290: pointer date, day and month, central seconds, 18,000 vibrations per hour, and approximately 40 hours of power reserve. This one is protected by an Incabloc shock absorber, as indicated on the dial. It has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 33mm diameter, 39.6mm Lug-to-lug and 10.9mm thickness, it suits wrists of approximately 15 to 18cm — a guideline, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. The dial, filled right to the edge, gives it more presence on the wrist than its diameter suggests. The Lug width measures 18mm, making it easy to change the strap.
