Atelier Note
A star beneath the hands, an order from the Ministry of Defence engraved at the bottom of the dial — the watch of Soviet commanders, as Tchistopol produced it.
A Komandirskie from the 1970s, the commanders' watch
This watch is a Vostok Komandirskie — literally a “commander's watch” — produced in the 1970s in Tchistopol, the watchmaking town of Tatarstan where the Vostok factory had settled during the war. The bottom of the dial bears the inscription that gives these examples their value: ЗАКАЗ МО СССР — order of the Ministry of Defence of the USSR. It was not a military-style watch: it was official issue, distributed through Soviet army stores.
The black dial lays out the vocabulary: luminous 12, 9 and 6 numerals and baton markers with a cream patina from the decades, the Командирские signature in script, the red star of the Army at the lower centre, the inscription Чистополь — Tchistopol — spelled out in full, and a date window with red numerals at three o’clock. The white bezel graduated in degrees, from 0 to 330, extends its instrumental spirit: a heading is read like an hour.
The tonneau case with polished sides, typical of Soviet production of the decade, measures 37.9mm — a true period men’s size, rare among Soviet watches. The skeleton hands with luminous channels sweep across the black dial, with a seconds hand featuring an arrow counterweight.
The hand-wound mechanical movement from Tchistopol — Vostok calibre, to be confirmed upon opening — has been checked by our partner watchmakers and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted on a later black leather strap.
Three points to note
01
ЗАКАЗ МО СССР — the order of the Soviet Ministry of Defence, engraved on the dial, which distinguishes genuine issue pieces.
02
Tchistopol star dial — the period Komandirskie, with cream-patinated lume and red date.
03
Bezel graduated in degrees — the compass spirit of military instruments, from 0 to 330.
Why choose a vintage Soviet watch?
This vintage Vostok watch holds a distinctive place among vintage men’s and women’s watches : it is an object of history on the wrist — the actual watch of a vanished army, produced by the millions, yet period examples bearing the MO USSR marking, with original patinated dials, are becoming rarer in the face of reissues. The Soviet watch is one of the last accessible collecting territories: robust mechanics, rich history, controlled budget.
Like all our vintage mechanical watches, this one has been opened and inspected by our partner watchmakers: movement verification, examination of the dial, hands and case. Every vintage watch we offer comes with an Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year warranty, and lifetime authenticity guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Vostok Komandirskie?
Literally “commander's watch”: the line that the Vostok factory in Chistopol produced for the Soviet army from 1965 onward. Robust, legible, mechanical, it was issued to officers and sold in military stores — the inscription ЗАКАЗ МО СССР on the dial means “order of the USSR Ministry of Defence.” Vostok still exists and produces modern Komandirskie models: period Soviet examples, like this one, are the ones collectors seek out.
What does the inscription ЗАКАЗ МО СССР mean?
“Order of the USSR Ministry of Defence” — the inscription that distinguishes watches produced as part of the official issue. Together with the signature Чистополь (Chistopol, Vostok's historic headquarters) and the Army star, it forms the complete identity card of a period Soviet Komandirskie, as opposed to civilian production and reissues made after 1991.
The Crystal is rated 6/10: is that a problem?
It shows pronounced scratches, which our photographs present without retouching — this is the lived history of a watch for military use, and we prefer to show it rather than conceal it. The acrylic Crystal on these references remains common and can be replaced by any watchmaker at modest cost; we chose to leave that choice to the future owner, between complete originality and the comfort of a new Crystal.
How do you wind a hand-wound watch?
Gently turn the crown clockwise about twenty turns, until you feel resistance. Never force it beyond that point. Daily winding, at the same time each day, is enough to keep the watch running — Chistopol calibres are renowned for enduring decades of this routine.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a diameter of 37.9mm, a Lug-to-lug of 41.5mm and a thickness of 9.2mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15.5 to 19.5cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. It is a true men's watch format for its era, rare among Soviet watches, and its white bezel gives it a strong presence. The Lug width measures 18mm, which makes it easy to change the strap.
