A sixties Vostok, the civilian watch from Chistopol

This watch is a Vostok — Восток, “Orient” — produced in the 1960s by the watch factory in Chistopol, in Tatarstan: the manufacture evacuated from Moscow during the war, established on the banks of the Kama River, and whose name Vostok — that of Gagarin’s spacecraft — ultimately came to cover the entire production. Everything is written in Russian, from the signature to Сделано в СССР: this is a version for the domestic market, the watch worn by the Soviets themselves.

Where the military Vostoks played the role of instrument, this one is the Vostok de ville: a finely fluted golden bezel that encircles the steel with a line of gold — the period two-tone —, a light dial with golden applied hour markers with black inserts, punctuated by framed minute dots, and the inscription 17 камней — seventeen jewels. Three steel hands sweep across the whole.

The dial bears the frank patina of its six decades — an uneven veil that our photographs show without retouching: it is an original dial, never restored, and we prefer to show it rather than conceal it.

The hand-wound mechanical movement was serviced in 2024 by our partner watchmakers — complete disassembly, cleaning, oiling and adjustment — and is guaranteed for one year. The watch is fitted with a later black smooth leather strap.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Vostok?
The Chistopol manufacture, in Tatarstan — born from the evacuation of a Moscow watch factory during the war, established on the banks of the Kama River. Its watches bore several brands in the 1950s, before the name Vostok — “Orient”, that of Gagarin’s spacecraft — came to crown the entire production. Official supplier to the Soviet Ministry of Defense from 1965 onward, the factory still exists today.

Is the dial patina a defect?
It is the lived history of a sixty-year-old dial that has never been restored, and we prefer to show it rather than conceal it: our photographs document it precisely, and the price of the piece takes this into account. A refinished dial would present a perfect surface but would have lost its originality — on period Soviet watches, often restored without care, originality takes precedence.

Why is everything written in Cyrillic?
Because this watch was intended for the Soviet domestic market: Восток in cursive, « 17 камней » — seventeen jewels — and « Сделано в СССР » written out in full. Export versions translated these markings into English; domestic versions, like this one, are regarded by collectors as the most authentic.

What does the 2024 service include?
A complete service by our partner watchmakers: disassembly of the movement, cleaning of each component, replacement of the oils, rate adjustment, and reassembly. This is the maintenance that restores a sixty-year-old mechanism to its original regularity, and spares it from any further intervention for many years. The movement is guaranteed for one year.

Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a diameter of 36.8mm, 42.7mm of Lug-to-lug, and a thickness of 11.3mm, it suits wrists of approximately 15.5 to 19cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. It is a true men's size for its period, with a contemporary presence. The Lug width measures 18mm, making it easy to change the strap.
