Seiko round gold-plated watch with cow horns: the ultra-thin dress watch with guilloché bezel

This Seiko watch is a dress watch for both men and women, designed in the most classic spirit of the de ville watch. Its round gold-plated case stands out for two defining features: a guilloché bezel, finely fluted all around, and cow horns, long and curved downward, which stretch the silhouette well beyond an ordinary case. The whole measures 30.5mm (32.3mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 35mm and a thickness of only 5.3mm, Crystal included. A slim, characterful piece, made to slip under a cuff.

The white lacquered dial creates a crisp, elegant contrast with the bezel. Twelve black Roman numerals run around it, framed by a double internal railway minute track that adds discreet depth. The Seiko Quartz signature occupies the top of the dial, while the period “SQ” medallion is set at 6 o’clock. Two slender blackened hands are all that is needed for the display: no seconds hand, no date, only the essentials read against an immaculate background.

Inside beats the Seiko calibre 8020, an ultra-thin analog quartz movement produced in Japan in the 1980s. Its slim two-hand construction is precisely what allows the watch’s 5.3mm profile. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipment. Seiko did not publish a precision specification for this calibre: we therefore make no numerical claim.

On the wrist, this piece behaves like a de ville jewel. The curved cow horns extend the case and give it a stronger presence than its diameter might suggest. The warm gold plating, guilloché bezel and white dial form an elegant, timeless ensemble, here accentuated by a black genuine crocodile leather strap. This strap is not original; it is fitted with a Buckle buckle. The Lug width of 17mm points replacement straps toward slim widths.

Three points to note

  • The cow horns and guilloché bezel are the piece’s two signature details: they clearly set it apart from an ordinary dress watch.
  • The dial bears a few small marked spots, visible up close: signs of age that we prefer to note rather than embellish.
  • The case is gold-plated, not solid: repeated friction against a bracelet or belt Buckle should be avoided.

Frequently asked questions

What are cow-horn lugs?
Cow-horn lugs (or cow-horn lugs) are solid, long lugs curved downward in a lyre shape, extending markedly outward from the case. A hallmark of mid-20th-century dress watches, they give the piece a longer silhouette and a stronger presence on the wrist. Here they are one of the watch's two signature design elements, along with the guilloché bezel.

Is calibre Seiko 8020 reliable?
Yes. The 8020 is an extra-flat analog quartz movement produced in Japan in the 1980s for Seiko dress watches. Its simple two-hand construction makes it durable, and in practice maintenance is limited to battery replacement. The movement in this piece has been checked by our watchmaker and is guaranteed for 1 year.

What is a guilloché bezel?
It is a bezel adorned with fine, regular grooves, machined to catch the light all around the dial. This decoration, inherited from classical watchmaking, sets the piece apart from an ordinary smooth case and adds an extra note of refinement. On this Seiko, it elegantly frames the white Roman-numeral dial.

Is this Seiko 8020-7080 waterproof?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original seals have aged and the case back pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid showers, pools, and the sea. A simple contact with rainwater, however, does not pose any problem.

What wrist size does a 30.5mm case suit?
A 30.5mm diameter with a 35mm Lug-to-lug is suitable for wrists of approximately 14 to 18cm. This is the classic dress-watch format: discreet on a masculine wrist, perfectly proportioned on a feminine wrist. The slim 5.3mm case allows it to be worn under a cuff without discomfort.
