Seiko gold-plated quartz: a Japanese dress watch with Roman numerals from the 1990s

This Seiko watch is a unisex dress watch, designed for both women and men in the spirit of the most understated de ville watches. It belongs to that family of Japanese timepieces from the 1990s whose ambition was not to stand out, but to disappear beneath a shirt cuff. Case round gold-plated, smooth and domed bezel, slender welded lugs: nothing protrudes, nothing draws the eye. The whole piece measures 34mm (35.5mm with the crown) for a thickness of 6.5mm, Crystal included.

The cream dial is the true focus of the piece. Twelve tall, slender black Roman numerals frame an inner railway minute track punctuated by small red triangles at five-minute intervals: a discreet graphic detail, yet one that lends the whole composition an unexpected tension. The date window is set at 3 o'clock, framed in white. The gold-tone hands, openworked for the hours and minutes, leave the slender seconds hand to sweep across the railway minute track without ever crowding it. The Seiko signature and the Quartz mention are printed high beneath XII, in measured lettering.

Inside beats the Seiko caliber 7N22, an analog quartz movement produced in Japan during the 1990s. Three hands and a date: Seiko designed it for reliability rather than display. The original stated accuracy was ±15 seconds per month, with a SR920SW battery whose original stated autonomy reached five years. This is the very definition of a dress watch movement: slim, understated, forgotten as soon as it works. The movement has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping.

On the wrist, the proportions prove ideal. A diameter of 34mm and a 40.5mm Lug-to-lug place this Seiko in the realm of classic de ville watches, equally at ease on a slender wrist or a medium one. The 18mm Lug width allows for every strap variation. The piece is today fitted with a dark brown genuine crocodile leather strap, with a steel pin buckle, which is not original but perfectly echoes the vocabulary of the watch: warm, matte, without superfluous shine.

Three points to note

  • The 7N22 caliber is no longer produced: movement spare parts are becoming scarcer, but SR920SW batteries remain available everywhere.
  • The red triangles on the railway minute track are a period marker: they visually date the piece to the 1990s and do not appear on modern reissues.
  • The gold plating is in excellent condition, but remains plating: it calls for avoiding repeated rubbing against a bracelet or a stiff leather strap.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Seiko 7N22 caliber reliable?
Yes. The 7N22 is an analog quartz movement with three hands and date, produced in Japan in the 1990s. Its original stated accuracy was ±15 seconds per month. It is a simple, robust caliber, designed to run for decades without anything other than a battery change. The movement in this example has been checked by our watchmaker and is guaranteed for 1 year.

Which battery for a Seiko 7N22?
An SR920SW battery, also referenced as 370. The original stated autonomy by Seiko is five years. This battery is available from any watchmaker and in most jewelry stores. A new battery has been installed before shipping.

Is this Seiko 7N22-8A20 water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged and the pressure on the case back is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool and the sea. A simple contact with rainwater, however, poses no difficulty.

Does a 34mm case suit which wrist?
A 34mm diameter with a Lug-to-lug of 40.5mm fits wrists of approximately 14 to 18cm. This is the classic dress watch format: discreet on an average पुरुष wrist, perfectly proportioned on a feminine wrist. The slenderness of the case, 6.5mm, allows it to be worn under a cuff without discomfort.

From which year does this Seiko 7N22-8A20 date?
The 7N22 caliber was produced during the 1990s, which places the piece in that decade. At Seiko, the serial number engraved on the back allows for a more precise dating: the first digit indicates the year and the second the month of production. We date this watch to the 1990s, without claiming a precise year that we could not guarantee.
