Universal Genève automatic: a vintage watch with micro-rotor

This Universal Genève watch is an elegant vintage automatic, dressed in a round gold-plated case and a silver sunburst dial. Dated 1958, it is powered by the celebrated micro-rotor from the Geneva manufacture, one of the finest automatic movements of its era. With its versatile proportions, it can be worn equally well on a man’s or a woman’s wrist. A Swiss manufacture watch, with character and timeless elegance.

The golden dial is of exquisite finesse: it features the applied “U” logo and the “Universal Genève” signature, applied Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9, and slender faceted baton hour markers. The mention “Automatic 23 Jewels” appears at 6 o’clock. Two gold dauphine hands and a central sweep seconds hand glide across the dial — a sober and refined dial, typical of Universal Genève dress watches from the late 1950s.

At the heart of this Universal Genève beats the caliber 215 with micro-rotor, one of the very first automatic movements with an integrated oscillating weight — a patented innovation by the manufacture, which also equipped the legendary Polerouter designed by Gérald Genta. On this version intended at the time for the American market (caliber 215-97), the dial states “23 rubies”: these are the 17 rubies of the movement plus 6 additional rubies, an original and perfectly authentic feature. Fully serviced, this micro-rotor offers reliable and exceptionally smooth operation.

With its 34.5mm case and elongated faceted lugs, this vintage watch offers an elegant presence on the wrist, equally suited to men and women — a true Unisex watch. The original dial is superb; the hands show slight wear to the gilding and the Crystal plexiglass, signed UG, is rated 7/10 (fine signs of use) — all details disclosed with complete transparency. It is fitted with a black lizard-style leather strap, non-original, with a steel pin buckle Buckle.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Universal Genève vintage?
Yes, absolutely. Dated 1958 and fitted with the caliber 215 micro-rotor movement, it is nearly seventy years old: an authentic Universal Genève vintage watch, from an era considered the golden age of the manufacture.

What is a micro-rotor movement?
The micro-rotor is a miniaturized oscillating weight integrated into the thickness of the movement rather than mounted above it. This innovation, patented by Universal Genève in the 1950s, allows for automatic winding while preserving a very slim watch. The caliber 215 is one of the earliest examples, also used on the celebrated Polerouter.

Why does the dial indicate “23 jewels”?
This is an original feature of the versions intended at the time for the American market (caliber 215-97). The movement contains 17 jewels, plus 6 additional jewels, making 23 in total as displayed on the dial. This is perfectly authentic and specific to these models.

Is the case solid gold?
No: it is a gold-plated case over a steel back, a common configuration on dress watches of this era. The plating offers the brilliance of gold and remains, on this piece, in very good overall condition.

Is this watch suitable for a man or a woman?
It is a Unisex watch. Its 34.5mm case, enhanced by elongated faceted lugs, gives it a strong wrist presence, for both men and women. Its dress-watch shape and silver dial make it an elegant watch for every occasion.
