Seiko gold-plated: the Japanese dress watch with a midnight blue dial, Roman numerals and small seconds

This Seiko watch is a dress watch designed for both men and women, with a confident elegance. Its round gold-plated case, with a guilloché bezel and slender lugs, frames a dial of rare richness. It measures 32mm (33mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 38mm and a thickness of 7.8mm. A classic and refined piece, with a warm presence.

The dark navy blue dial is the watch's greatest asset. With a deep midnight blue that turns black in the shadows and comes alive in the light, it features generously sized applied gilded Roman numerals, a 13-24h scale printed around the periphery for reading the second time zone, and a small seconds at 6 o'clock set within a graduated counter. The gilded SEIKO signature crowns the center. The gilded hands stand out elegantly against the blue background, in the spirit of a vintage officer's watch.

At its heart beats the Seiko 2G28 caliber, a quartz movement with small seconds. In practice, maintenance is limited to battery replacement by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. It is the choice of precision and simplicity, serving a dial of great elegance.

On the wrist, the piece embraces vintage elegance. The warm gold-plated case and midnight blue dial create a rich and rare harmony, here accented by a black faux lizard leather strap. This strap is not original; it is mounted on a Buckle buckle. The Lug width of 14mm directs the choice of replacement straps toward narrower widths.

Three points to note

  • The dark navy blue dial, rarer than a black dial, is the true asset of the piece: it changes depth depending on the light.
  • The 13-24h scale around the periphery allows reading of the second time zone, a military-inspired detail that enriches the dial.
  • The case is gold-plated, not solid: it shows fine signs of wear, disclosed with complete transparency.

Frequently asked questions

What color is the dial?
The dial is a deep dark navy blue, a profound midnight blue that appears almost black in the shadows and reveals its full hue in the light. It is a rarer and more subtle color than a simple black dial, and that is what gives this piece all its character, in contrast with its gold numerals and hands.

What is the purpose of the 13-24h scale on the dial?
This peripheral scale, from 13 to 24 hours, allows the time to be read in 24-hour format alongside the classic display. It is a military or railway-inspired detail, practical for avoiding any confusion between morning and afternoon, and it enhances the dial visually.

What is a small seconds?
The small seconds is a seconds counter housed in a separate subdial, here at 6 o’clock, rather than at the center of the dial. It is a traditional layout, inherited from vintage watches, which brings a touch of classic elegance and balanced legibility. On this Seiko, it is perfectly functional.

Is the case solid gold?
No: it is a gold-plated case with a steel back, a common construction on Seiko dress watches. The plating brings the warmth and brilliance of gold for a fraction of its price. This piece shows fine signs of wear on its plating, disclosed with full transparency.

Does a 32mm case suit which wrist?
With a 32mm diameter and a 38mm Lug-to-lug, this is the classic dress watch format: ideally worn on a slender to medium wrist, where it sits in perfect proportion. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on taste and the desired presence on the wrist, this piece may be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The sizing is only a guide, never a rule.
