A vintage Seiko watch from 1985, rectangular gold-plated with a gold-tone linen dial
This vintage Seiko watch bears the reference 9021-5340 and the Seiko 9021 calibre, a three-hand no-date quartz developed in Suwa in the 1980s. The case is gold-plated, rectangular, with slightly curved sides. Its serial number places it in 1985.
The gold-tone dial is original and gives the piece its character: its surface has a linen texture, a very fine crosshatch grain that diffuses light instead of reflecting it, and which changes appearance depending on the angle. Twelve applied gold-tone baton markers mark the hours, doubled by a dot minute track. Below twelve, the SEIKO signature in black, the dial's only contrast.
The gold-tone baton hands are original, with a fine centre seconds hand. The case measures 25mm in width for 35mm Lug-to-lug and 5mm thick; its curved sides and narrow stepped bezel hold the Crystal close to the middle case. The gold-tone crown is original and the caseback is steel. The watch is presented on a later green lizard-effect leather strap, in Lug width of 18mm.
The movement is the Seiko 9021 calibre, a quartz movement with five jewels, stated accuracy of around fifteen seconds per month, with no date or complication — this is what allows the 5mm case thickness. It has been checked by our partner watchmakers, it is functional and guaranteed for one year.

Frequently asked questions
What is a textured linen dial?
A dial whose surface is engraved with a very fine crosshatched grain, recalling the weave of a linen fabric. Unlike a sunburst finish, which reflects light in rays, the linen texture diffuses it: the dial appears matte when viewed head-on and lights up in sections when the wrist moves. On a gold-tone dial, this is what avoids the mirror effect.
What is the Seiko 9021 calibre?
A three-hand analogue quartz movement developed by Seiko in Suwa, produced in the 1980s: five jewels, stated accuracy of around fifteen seconds per month, with no date. It is a simple, slim movement that Seiko fitted to its dress lines of the period. Its battery can be replaced by any watchmaker.
Is the dial original?
Yes. The linen texture is even right to the edge, the markers are applied rather than printed, and the movement code appears at the bottom of the dial as on every Seiko piece from this period. This dial has not been retouched.
Does a quartz watch require maintenance?
Less than a mechanical one: no winding, no periodic maintenance, accuracy within a few seconds per month. The only routine action is battery replacement, by a watchmaker. The point to watch is not to leave a dead battery in the case: it will eventually leak and damage the movement.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or large wrist?
At 25mm wide, 35mm Lug-to-lug, and 5mm thick, it suits wrists of around 14 to 17.5cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its slimness matters as much as its width: at 5mm, it slips easily under a cuff. The 18mm Lug width is one of the most common, which leaves a full choice of replacement straps.
