Seiko Tank steel: the Japanese dress watch with a black dial and navy blue circle motif

This Seiko watch is a dress watch for both men and women, designed in the classic vocabulary of the shaped watch. Its rectangular case in steel, with sharp angles and polished flanks, cultivates a sober, timeless elegance. The case measures 28mm (30mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 34mm and a thickness of just 6.3mm. A slim, graphic piece, made to slip under a cuff.

The black dial is the star feature of the piece. Its surface is entirely covered with a grid-like pattern of small navy blue circles, a textured lattice that catches the light in thousands of points and shifts the dial from deep black to midnight blue depending on the angle. The applied steel baton indexes set the rhythm around the perimeter, while the small Seiko vintage medallion sits below the center. Two steel baton hands are all that is needed: no seconds hand, no date, just the essentials on this beautifully worked background.

Inside beats the caliber Seiko 7820, a high-end analog quartz movement with two hands, produced in Japan in the 1980s. Its slim construction is precisely what makes the watch's 6.3mm profile possible. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. Seiko did not publish any precision specification for this caliber: we therefore make no numerical claim.

On the wrist, the piece behaves like a de ville jewel. The steel and black dial with navy blue circles create a dark, refined ensemble, here highlighted by a genuine crocodile leather black strap that extends the sobriety of the whole. This strap is not original; it is mounted on a buckle Buckle. The Lug width measuring 22mm firmly anchors the watch on the wrist.

Three points to note

  • The black background dial with navy blue circle motif is the strength of the piece: a dial treatment characteristic of careful Seiko dress watches, revealed in the light.
  • No original precision specification has been published by Seiko for this caliber. We therefore make no claim of any value in seconds per month.
  • The Crystal and brushed steel bear visible micro-scratches from use in raking light, consistent with the age of the piece.

Frequently asked questions

Is this rectangular Seiko a Cartier ?
No. This is an authentic Seiko, signed on the dial and engraved with reference 7820-5130. The rectangular steel case with its elaborately finished dial belongs to the common vocabulary of dress watches from the 1980s, adopted by many Japanese and Swiss houses. This piece claims nothing other than what it is, and the authenticity of its brand is guaranteed for life by Atelier Victor.

What is the circle dial on this Seiko ?
It is a black dial covered with an embossed mesh of small navy blue circles, which animates the entire surface. In the light, the pattern catches the reflections and shifts the tone from deep black to midnight blue. It is a dial treatment characteristic of refined Japanese dress watches, and an original detail specific to this piece.

Is the Seiko caliber 7820 reliable ?
Yes. The 7820 is a high-end analog quartz movement, with two hands, produced in Japan in the 1980s. Its simple, slim construction makes it durable, and its maintenance in practice is limited to battery replacement. The movement in this example has been checked by our watchmaker and comes with a 1-year warranty.

Is this Seiko 7820-5130 water-resistant ?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged and the case back pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool and the sea. However, simple contact with rainwater does not pose any difficulty.

Is a 28mm rectangular case suitable for which wrist ?
On a rectangular watch, it is the Lug-to-lug that matters: 34mm here, which places the piece on wrists of about 15 to 18cm. This is the classic dress-watch format: discreet on a man's wrist, perfectly proportioned on a woman's wrist. Its 6.3mm thickness allows it to slip under a cuff.
