Seiko extra-thin steel: the Japanese dress watch with silver linen dial and hand-wound movement
This Seiko watch is a dress watch, unisex, worn equally by a man or a woman, in the purest spirit of the Japanese dress watch from the early 1970s. Its round steel case, with a slim bezel and short, tapered lugs, embodies a clean and timeless classicism. It measures 33mm (35mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 36mm and a thickness of only 7.2mm. A slender and discreet piece, made to slip under a cuff.
The silver dial reveals a so-called “linen” texture, a cross-brushed finish that catches the light in a fine silky grid, highly sought-after on period dress dials. Faceted applied baton hour markers rhythmically frame the dial, with not a single numeral. The SEIKO signature occupies the top of the dial, the brand’s small lightning logo the bottom. Two slender blackened baton hands are all that is needed: no seconds hand, no date, only the essentials.
Inside beats the calibre Seiko 2220, a mechanical movement with hand-wound winding. No battery here: the watch is wound by hand each morning, in a gesture now rare. This is what sets this piece apart from the countless quartz watches of the same era and gives it its horological appeal. The movement of this example has been serviced by our watchmaker.
On the wrist, the piece wears like a timeless de ville watch. Polished steel and the silver linen dial create an understated tone-on-tone ensemble, here accentuated by a black genuine crocodile leather strap. This strap is not original; it is mounted on a steel Buckle. The 18mm Lug width leaves the choice of replacement straps open.
Three points to note
- The watch is mechanical with hand-wound movement: it must be wound daily to function. It is neither automatic nor quartz.
- The linen dial, with its cross-brushed finish, is the true refinement of the piece: a silky texture that changes with the light.
- The dial shows a few fine marks and the steel bezel has slight signs of wear, consistent with the age of the piece. We prefer to note this rather than embellish it.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Seiko automatic or quartz?
Neither: it is a hand-wound mechanical watch. Its 2220 calibre must be wound by hand, generally once a day, by turning the crown. There is neither a battery nor an automatic rotor. It is a mode of operation that has become rare, and one of the attractions of this piece for lovers of traditional watchmaking.
What is a « linen » dial?
The linen dial, or « linen », refers to a brushed finish of fine crossed lines, evoking the weave of linen fabric. This texture catches the light in a silky, ever-changing pattern, bringing subtle depth to the dial. It is a highly prized refinement on dress watches from the 1960s and 1970s.
How do you wind a hand-wound watch?
Gently turn the crown clockwise, about twenty turns, until you feel resistance. Never force it beyond that point. Daily winding, at the same time each day, is enough to keep the watch running and ensures the best consistency.
Is this Seiko water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original seals have aged and the case back pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool and the sea. A simple exposure to rainwater, however, does not pose any difficulty.
Does a 33mm case suit which wrist?
With a 33mm diameter and a Lug-to-lug of 36mm, this is the classic dress watch format: ideally worn on a slim to medium wrist, where it sits in perfect proportion, and discreetly under a cuff thanks to its 7.2mm thickness. That said, a watch is also a matter of style: depending on taste and the look desired, this piece can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, on all kinds of wrists. The market value is only a reference point, never a rule.
