Seiko Gold-Plated Round Watch: the Japanese dress watch with Roman dial and integrated bracelet

This Seiko watch is a dress watch designed for both men and women, in the classic spirit of the de ville watch from the 1990s. Fully gold-plated, it features a round case with a wide bezel and an integrated bracelet that extends the case into a seamless silhouette. The case measures 33.5mm (34mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 39mm and a thickness of only 6.1mm. A warm, luminous piece, all in gold.

The white dial creates a refined play of textures. A sunburst silvered chapter ring surrounds the white lacquered center, carrying twelve slender black Roman numerals around its perimeter. The Seiko signature sits at the top of the dial. Two gilt baton hands and a fine seconds hand sweep across the whole: a sober, legible display, where the black-on-white contrast answers the warmth of the gold case.

Beating inside is the Seiko V701 caliber, an analog quartz movement with three hands produced in Japan. It is a reliable, understated caliber, designed to run for years with no maintenance beyond a battery change. The movement in this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. Seiko has not published a precision specification for this caliber, so we make no numerical claim.

On the wrist, the all-gold ensemble gives the piece all its character. The gold-plated case and bracelet, matched together, make for a warm and dressy watch in the taste of the 1990s. The original bracelet, with integrated mesh, is adjustable up to a 20cm wrist circumference and secured by a deployant clasp. The fluted gold-plated crown sits on the right side.

Three points to note

  • Case and bracelet are gold-plated, not solid gold: the plating wears through abrasion and here shows scratches, disclosed with full transparency.
  • The sunburst silvered chapter ring and Roman numerals give the dial a dressy depth, far from an ordinary flat dial.
  • No original precision specification has been published by Seiko for this caliber. We therefore make no claim regarding any seconds-per-month figure.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Seiko V701 caliber reliable?
Yes. The V701 is a three-hand analog quartz movement produced in Japan. Its simple construction makes it durable, and in practice its maintenance is limited to battery replacement. The movement in this example has been checked by our watchmaker and is guaranteed for 1 year.

Is the case solid gold?
No. This is a gold-plated case and bracelet over a steel base, a technique widely used on dress watches of this period. The plating provides the warmth and brilliance of gold for a fraction of its price. This piece shows plating wear, disclosed in full transparency and consistent with its age.

Is this Seiko V701-2L10 water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original seals have aged and the caseback pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool, and the sea. A simple splash of rainwater, however, poses no difficulty.

How should a gold-plated case be maintained?
Gold plating is a layer of precious metal deposited on a steel case: it wears through abrasion, never through oxidation. Avoid repeated rubbing against a bracelet or a Buckle of a belt, and remove the watch before any manual work. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for routine care; abrasive products and ultrasonic baths should be avoided.

Is a 33.5mm case suitable for which wrist?
A 33.5mm diameter with a 39mm Lug-to-lug is suitable for wrists of approximately 15 to 18.5cm. It is a classic and versatile size: discreet on a masculine wrist, comfortable on a slightly fuller feminine wrist. The slimness of the case, 6.1mm, allows it to slip under a cuff without discomfort.
