Seiko Tonneau — A Japanese dress watch with 1980s design

This vintage Seiko watch, produced around 1981, illustrates a silhouette that is rare today: the tonneau shape (or cushion case in English), a square case with very rounded edges that characterized Japanese watchmaking aesthetics in the early 1980s. Halfway between the roundness of a classic case and the modernity of a carrée watch, the tonneau gives a singular presence on the wrist, standing apart from the usual dress watches.

The sunburst silver dial plays with the light thanks to its brushed finish radiating from the center. This texture, prized by dress watch enthusiasts, gives the watch an elegant visual depth that changes with the angle. The applied black baton indexes in relief and the SEIKO QUARTZ signature at 12 o'clock create a refined, dressy reading. The small "lightning bolt" logo of Seiko Quartz at 6 o'clock, a marker of the brand's quartz models from that period, confirms the authenticity of the piece.

Powered by the Seiko 5931 caliber, a reliable and precise Japanese quartz movement from the early 1980s, this piece offers the practicality of quartz without sacrificing the charm of a true vintage watch. Its 6.5 mm profile remains restrained for ideal wearing comfort, and its 33 mm format makes it a perfectly Unisex piece — feminine on a slender wrist, masculine on a modern wrist that appreciates compact proportions.

Mounted on a navy blue leather strap with contrasting stitching, this Seiko Tonneau clearly departs from classic dressy black: the petrol blue brings a relaxed masculine touch that contrasts beautifully with the brushed steel case. Selected, authenticated and serviced by Atelier Victor. Fast and secure international shipping.

Three points to note about this piece

  • Case steel with a tonneau shape (cushion case): a rare and recognizable Japanese 1980s silhouette.
  • Sunburst silver dial with applied baton indexes and Seiko Quartz "lightning bolt" logo: the authentic signature of Japanese quartz models of the era.
  • Navy blue leather strap with contrasting beige stitching: a color choice that departs from classic dress codes and adds character.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a tonneau watch ?
A tonneau watch ("cushion case" in English) refers to a square case with very rounded corners, midway between a carrée watch and a round watch. Very popular in the 70s and early 80s, this distinctive silhouette offers a unique presence on the wrist, different from the classic round form. It is now rare on the new market, making it an increasingly sought-after aesthetic choice in vintage circles.
  • What is the Seiko caliber 5931 ?
The 5931 caliber is a Japanese quartz Seiko movement from the early 80s, powering the brand's dress watches. It is a reliable and precise caliber, easy to maintain, requiring only a battery replacement every 2 to 3 years.
  • What does the lightning logo on the dial mean ?
The small stylized lightning-shaped logo present at 6 o'clock on the dial is the official marker of Seiko quartz models from the 70s-80s. It is the equivalent of the "SQ" logo found on other Seiko Quartz series of the era — a guarantee of authenticity and a detail appreciated by collectors.
  • Is this watch suitable for a man or a woman ?
With its tonneau case of 33mm and its 6.5mm profile, it is a perfectly Unisex piece — feminine on a slender wrist, masculine for those who appreciate compact formats in the tradition of vintage watches from the 80s, when diameters were naturally more modest than today.
  • Is the Crystal mineral repairable ?
Yes. The Crystal mineral can be polished to erase superficial scratches, or replaced with a new identical Crystal by our watchmakers for a modest cost. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss a possible intervention.
  • What is the international delivery time ?
Dispatch within 48 hours, worldwide delivery in 3 to 5 days via DHL Express, insurance included.
