The League: a 5.5mm Japanese dress watch with Roman numerals
This watch Seiko belongs to the The League line, reference 5P31-7A40, dated 1988. It is a Japanese quartz dress watch, whose round gold-plated case with steel back measures 33mm in diameter and 5.5mm thick.
The bezel is constructed in two levels: an outer edge worked in fine beaded toothing, then a polished inner ring descending at an angle toward the Crystal. The lugs are slim and short, and bring the watch to 39.5mm Lug-to-lug. At 5.5mm between the back and the Crystal, the piece slips under a shirt cuff without lifting it.
The silver-white dial has a sandblasted surface finish, which catches the light with a fine grain. Twelve black Roman numerals occupy the outer edge, framed by two concentric railway minute tracks surrounding the numeral zone. Below twelve o'clock, the mention THE LEAGUE; above six o'clock, the signature SEIKO. At the bottom of the dial, the factory marking JAPAN 5P31 7A30 D.
The hour and minute hands are black and tapered, accompanied by a fine gold-tone centre seconds hand crossing the entire dial. The quartz movement, calibre Seiko 5P31, has been checked by our watchmakers, fitted with a new battery, and it carries a 1-year guarantee.

What is the The League line from Seiko?
It is a series of dress watches that Seiko intended for its Japanese market, identifiable by the words THE LEAGUE printed below 12 o'clock. It brings together classically styled dials — Roman or calligraphic numerals, railway minute tracks — with slim cases and quartz movements. It was produced with several calibres, including the 2G28 and the 5P31.
What does the reference 5P31-7A40 mean?
Seiko references are read in two parts: the first, here 5P31, designates the movement calibre; the second, 7A40, the case code, engraved on the caseback. The dial bears a distinct code, here 7A30, which identifies the dial alone. The caseback takes precedence over the dial in establishing a piece's reference.
Is a watch measuring 5.5mm thick fragile?
No, but it requires the same care as any older dress watch. The slimness comes from the quartz calibre and a very flat caseback; the case remains a rigid whole. This format can be worn daily while avoiding direct knocks, and it is rather the Crystal and the plating that show wear before the structure.
How should a gold-plated case be cared for?
The plating is a layer of gold deposited on a base metal: it becomes thinner at points of friction, mainly the bezel edges and the lugs. It is preserved by avoiding water, household products and cosmetics, and is cleaned with a soft, dry cloth, never with an abrasive or a polishing paste, which remove the layer.
Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist?
With a 33mm diameter, 39.5mm Lug-to-lug and 5.5mm thickness, it suits wrists of around 15 to 18cm — a guide, never a rule: everyone wears what they like. Its short lugs prevent any overhang on a slim wrist, and its thinness lets it slip under any cuff.
