Seiko The League steel: the dress watch with a round white dial and Roman numerals

This Seiko watch belongs to the The League line, a Japanese dress collection from the brand, and is worn equally by a man or a woman. Its round steel case, with a finely beaded bezel, cultivates a restrained classicism inspired by the most timeless de ville watches. It measures 33mm in total (34mm with the crown), with a Lug-to-lug of 39mm and a thickness of only 5.7mm, Crystal included. A slim, balanced piece, made to be worn every day as well as with formal attire.

The white lacquered dial is the heart of the piece. Twelve tall, slender black Roman numerals encircle it, framed by a double inner railway track that adds subtle graphic depth. The THE LEAGUE signature occupies the top of the dial, the Seiko brand the bottom. The blackened hands for the hours and minutes stand out sharply against the immaculate background, while a fine steel seconds hand sweeps across the whole. A pared-back design, entirely devoted to legibility.

Inside beats the Seiko caliber 5P31, an analog quartz movement produced in Japan from 1987 for the brand's dress watches. Its slim three-hand construction is precisely what allows the watch's 5.7mm profile. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipment. Seiko has not published any precision specification for this caliber: we therefore make no numerical claim.

On the wrist, the piece wears like a classic de ville watch. The steel and white dial form a clean, timeless ensemble, here accentuated by a black genuine crocodile leather strap that extends the overall sobriety. This strap is not original; it is fitted with a steel pin buckle. The 18mm Lug width allows complete freedom to change it.

Three points to note

  • The steel bezel is finely beaded around its edge: a discreet detail that sets this piece apart from an ordinary smooth case.
  • The bezel shows a dark patina in places, a trace of oxidation consistent with the age of the piece, which we prefer to disclose rather than beautify.
  • The 5P31 caliber is no longer produced: movement parts are becoming rarer, but a battery change remains a routine operation for any watchmaker.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Seiko The League line?
The League is a line of dress watches by Seiko, distributed in Japan, with a classic and understated spirit. It brings together carefully finished cases and clean dial layouts with numerals, designed for de ville wear. This example is a round version with a white dial and Roman numerals, powered by a Seiko quartz movement.

Is the Seiko 5P31 caliber reliable?
Yes. The 5P31 is an analog quartz movement produced in Japan from 1987 for dress watches by Seiko. Its simple three-hand construction makes it durable, and maintenance in practice is limited to battery replacement. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and is covered by a one-year warranty.

What is the beaded bezel of this Seiko?
It is a finely granulated decoration applied around the bezel, composed of tiny regular beads. This detail, inherited from classical watchmaking, sets the piece apart from an ordinary smooth case and lends it an extra touch of elegance. On this example, it shows a dark patina in places, consistent with its age.

Is this Seiko The League water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original seals have aged and the pressure on the case back is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool, and the sea. A simple contact with rainwater, however, does not pose any difficulty.

Is a 33mm case suitable for which wrist?
A 33mm diameter with a Lug-to-lug of 39mm suits wrists approximately 15 to 18.5cm. It is a classic and versatile size: discreet on a masculine wrist, comfortable on a slightly broader feminine wrist. The slimness of the case, 5.7mm, allows it to be worn under a cuff without discomfort.
