Seiko Two-Tone Spirit: the ultra-thin Japanese dress watch with a sanded silvered dial
This Seiko watch belongs to the Spirit line, the brand's Japanese dress collection, and can be worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its rectangular cushion case, with rounded corners, plays on the contrast between a steel case and a gold-plated bezel. It measures 27mm across (28mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 35mm and a thickness of only 6mm, Crystal included. A slender two-tone piece, made to slip under a cuff.
The silvered dial reveals, in the light, a subtle sanded finish that breaks up the flatness of the background without ever bringing it to life. The hour markers are simple applied gilt batons, double at 12 o'clock. The SPIRIT signature occupies the top of the dial, the Seiko brand the center. Two gilt baton hands and a slender seconds hand complete a display that is as legible as it is understated. A pure design, entirely in service of the gold-on-silver contrast.
Beating inside is the Seiko caliber 5E31, an analog quartz movement from the 5Exx family that Seiko reserved for its extra-thin dress cases. It is precisely this slim architecture that allows the watch's 6mm profile. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipping. Seiko did not publish a precision specification for this caliber: we therefore make no numerical claim.
On the wrist, the two-tone treatment gives the piece all its character. The gold-plated bezel warms the steel case, in a two-tone vocabulary that pairs just as well with a gold wedding band as with a steel signet ring. It is currently fitted with a khaki green genuine crocodile leather strap that beautifully highlights the gilding. This strap is not original; it is mounted on a Buckle steel buckle. The Lug width of 18mm leaves complete freedom to change it.

Is this rectangular Seiko a Cartier?
No. It is an authentic Seiko, signed on the dial as part of its Spirit line and engraved with its reference 5E31-5B50. The two-tone cushion case belongs to the common vocabulary of dress watches from the 1980s and 1990s, adopted by many Japanese and Swiss houses. This piece claims to be nothing more than what it is, and the authenticity of its brand is guaranteed for life by Atelier Victor.
What is the Seiko Spirit line?
Spirit is a Japanese line of Seiko bringing together dress watches with a discreet and versatile spirit. It combines refined cases, worked dials and reliable quartz calibres, in a register halfway between a de ville watch and an everyday watch. Yes. The 5E31 is an analogue three-hand quartz movement from the 5Exx family, which Seiko reserved for its extra-thin dress cases. Its simple construction makes it durable, and in practice maintenance is limited to battery replacement. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and comes with a 1-year warranty.
Is this Seiko Spirit 5E31-5B50 water-resistant?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged and the pressure on the caseback is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, the pool and the sea. However, a simple exposure to rainwater does not pose any problem.
Does a 27mm cushion case suit which wrist?
On a shaped watch, it is the Lug-to-lug that matters: 35mm here, which places the piece on wrists of around 15 to 18cm. The rectangular cushion format is the dress watch par excellence: discreet on a masculine wrist, perfectly proportioned on a feminine wrist. Its 6mm thickness allows it to slip under a cuff.
