The sporty elegance of Japanese quartz, signed SilverWave

This Seiko SilverWave from 1981 embodies a fascinating period in Japanese watchmaking, when Seiko was exploring quartz with as much technical ambition as aesthetic care. Its sunburst blue dial, of remarkable depth, captures the light in a gradient that shifts from midnight blue to steel blue depending on the angle. The applied indexes and baton hands give it perfect legibility and a refined appearance.

The SilverWave range occupies a special place in the brand’s history: it was one of Seiko’s first sporty “waterproof” lines, designed before the advent of its legendary divers. Positioned between dress watches and dive watches, it combined a clean design with robustness superior to that of contemporary models. The small wave-shaped logo present on the dial and on the caseback is not decorative: it identifies the models designed to withstand water and everyday wear.

Powered by the 8229 quartz caliber, renowned for its reliability and precision, it features a bilingual day-date window — with the day able to display in Japanese ideograms (kanji) or in English. A charming characteristic of models originally intended for the Japanese market, recalling the authenticity of the piece.

The brushed steel case, with the cushion shape characteristic of the 1980s, is fitted with its original integrated steel bracelet. A coherent and well-preserved ensemble, ideal for anyone seeking a versatile vintage watch, equally suited to a masculine or feminine wrist.

Three points to note:

  • Original sunburst blue dial, with beautiful depth, featuring the signature wave logo of the SilverWave range.
  • Robust and precise 8229 quartz caliber, bilingual kanji/English day-date display.
  • Japanese domestic market model (JDM), uncommon in Europe, on its original steel bracelet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Seiko SilverWave range?

Is the 8229 quartz caliber reliable?
Yes. The 8229 is a Seiko quartz movement renowned for its robustness and precision, considered particularly solid for its era. This watch has been checked by our watchmakers and comes with a one-year mechanical warranty.

Why is the day displayed in Japanese?
This is a JDM model (Japanese Domestic Market), originally sold exclusively in Japan. Its day aperture is bilingual: it can display the day in Japanese ideograms (kanji) or in English, depending on the setting. This is an authentic characteristic that attests to the piece's origin.

Can this watch be worn by a man or a woman?
