The refinement of a Roman numeral dial

This Seiko from the Lucent line embodies dress elegance in a polished steel rectangular case, in the spirit of Tank. Its slim profile and clean lines give it a classic, timeless allure. Signed Seiko, the world pioneer of the quartz watch, it combines electronic precision with refined detail. A discreet and distinguished piece, equally at ease by day or in the evening.

The dial is the heart of this watch: a lacquered white center, framed by a finely sandblasted silvered outer ring with bluish reflections, on which elegant gilt Roman numerals stand out. The Seiko signature and the mention “Lucent” are set with understated elegance, while three slender gilt hands — hour, minute and sweep seconds — glide above the ensemble. The contrast of white, silver and gold creates a particularly well-finished dial.

At the heart of this Seiko beats the caliber 5E21, an in-house analog quartz movement used in the Lucent and Spirit dress lines. Seiko made horological history by launching the Astron in 1969, the world’s first quartz wristwatch. This type movement offers superior precision to most mechanical watches and effortless everyday wear: a simple battery is all it takes to power it for years.

With its 24mm-wide case (33.5mm lug-to-lug) and slim profile, this Seiko can be worn just as comfortably on a man’s wrist as on a woman’s, in a dress and vintage register. It is in very fine condition: the original dial is clean and the sapphire crystal is intact. It is delivered on a black crocodile-style leather strap; its steel pin buckle is not original.

Three points to note

  • Polished steel rectangular Case (Tank spirit), slim profile, sapphire crystal.
  • White center dial and sandblasted silvered outer ring, gilt Roman numerals; Seiko quartz caliber 5E21.
  • Very fine overall condition; clean original dial, mounted on black crocodile-style leather.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this watch referred to as the "Tank" shape?
The "Tank" shape refers to a rectangular case with straight lines, popularized by Cartier — Tank is a registered model of the house, whose design is said to have been inspired by the tanks of the First World War. The term is now commonly used to describe dress watches with a rectangular shape. This Seiko is not a Cartier, but it belongs to that classic spirit, in a Japanese interpretation of the Lucent line.

What is the Seiko Lucent line?
Lucent is a line of Seiko dress watches, mainly produced in the 1990s, recognizable by its slim rectangular or carrée cases and refined dials. Designed for elegant dress wear, it showcases Seiko's expertise in the field of refined quartz watches.

What is the Seiko 5E21 caliber?
The 5E21 is an analog quartz movement designed by Seiko, used notably in the Lucent and Spirit dress lines. It displays hours, minutes, and seconds, and runs on a battery. Reliable and precise, it requires no mechanical servicing: a simple battery replacement is enough to keep it running for years.

What are the advantages of a quartz watch?
A quartz watch offers superior accuracy to most mechanical watches and requires no winding: a battery powers it for several years. It is a reliable, hassle-free solution, ideal for everyday wear.

Is this watch suitable for a man or a woman?
It is a women's piece. Its slim rectangular case suits both a masculine and feminine wrist. Its gold Roman numeral dial makes it a versatile dress watch, perfect for everyday wear as well as more formal occasions.
