Seiko Lord Quartz Steel: the high-end Japanese watch with green dial and bilingual day

This Seiko watch belongs to the Lord Quartz line, the Japanese house's high-end dress range, produced between 1978 and 1980 and rare enough to command, at the time, prices above certain King Quartz models. Unisex, it can be worn equally well by a man or a woman. Its carrée case, in a television shape and entirely in brushed steel, extends into an integrated bracelet that gives the piece its complete harmony. The case measures 31mm (33mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 38mm and a thickness of 9mm, Crystal included.

The green dial is the watch's major asset. In a deep forest green, it changes density according to the light, a rare and vivid color on an era piece. The applied baton indexes and the inner railroad track structure the perimeter, while the bright hands stand out sharply against the dark background. The SEIKO LORD QUARTZ signature occupies the top of the dial, the period medallion the bottom. At 3 o'clock, a double aperture displays the bilingual day and the date, the day disc switching between kanji and English depending on the setting.

Beating inside is the Seiko calibre 7853, a quartz movement with day and date from the Lord Quartz generation. This line represents the culmination of Japanese dress quartz from the late 1970s, when Seiko treated its battery-powered movements with the same care as its mechanical ones. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipment. Seiko did not publish any publicly available precision specification for this calibre: we therefore make no numerical claim.

On the wrist, the integrated bracelet in steel gives the piece a seamless look, highly characteristic of the architectural design of its era. Adjustable up to a 21cm wrist circumference, it continues the TV case without interruption. The steel crown is set into the right side. The whole, entirely original, bears the marks of a watch that has lived.

Three points to note

  • Lord Quartz is a rare line, positioned at the time at the top of Seiko's dress quartz catalog: this is the main collector's interest of this piece.
  • The green dial shows diffuse marks and spots, visible up close, and the Crystal has clear signs of use scratches. We prefer to mention it rather than embellish it.
  • The day disc is bilingual kanji/English: it is a marker of Seiko watches intended for the Japanese market, and not a defect.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Seiko Lord Quartz line ?
The Lord Quartz is Seiko’s high-end dress watch range, produced between 1978 and 1980. Rarer than the brand’s other quartz lines, it sat at the top of the catalog, above certain King Quartz models. It combines carefully finished cases and quality quartz calibers, and represents the culmination of late-1970s Japanese dress quartz.

Why does the day appear in Japanese characters ?
Because this Seiko was intended for the Japanese market. Its day wheel is bilingual: it switches between kanji characters and English depending on the position selected during setting. This is neither a defect nor an anomaly, but a sought-after authenticity marker on period Seiko models. Simply advance the day one extra step to return to English display.

What condition is the green dial in ?
The dial shows marks and diffuse spots, visible up close, as well as scratches on the Crystal. These are age-related traces that we disclose with full transparency: this piece has been worn. The green color remains vivid and rare, and that is what gives it its character, but we do not present it as a pristine collector’s piece.

Is this Seiko Lord Quartz 7853-5010 waterproof ?
No. Water resistance is never guaranteed on a vintage watch: the original gaskets have aged and the caseback pressure is no longer what it was on day one. Avoid the shower, swimming pool and sea. A brief contact with rainwater, however, poses no problem.

How do you set the day and date on this Seiko ?
The crown has two positions. First click: quick setting of the day and date, turning one way for the date and the other for the day. Second click: time setting. Avoid setting the date between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., when the calendar mechanism is engaged.
