Seiko hArmony gold-plated: the musical-hinged cover watch that plays a melody when opened
This Seiko watch belongs to the hArmony line and stands out for a rare and enchanting device: a hinged cover that plays a melody when opened. Like the old “savonnette” pocket watches of yesteryear, a gold-plated cover protects the dial; but here, the gesture of lifting it triggers a musical tune. A circular cut-out set into the cover allows a glimpse of the center of the dial without even opening it. Unisex, the piece is equally suited to a man or a woman. The case measures 34mm (37.5mm with the crown) for a Lug-to-lug of 40mm and a thickness of 8.9mm.
The white lacquered dial, once the cover is lifted, is of refined classicism. Twelve black Roman numerals encircle it, framed by an inner railway minute track, while an elegant red zigzag motif animates the center, beneath the SEIKO signature. The mention hArmony occupies the lower part of the dial, a nod to the piece’s musical function. Two slender gold-tone hands trace the time in the spirit of an old-school dress watch.
Inside beats a Seiko quartz movement, completed by a melody module linked to the cover. The watch is easy to maintain, with a battery change by any watchmaker. The movement of this example has been checked by our watchmaker and the battery replaced before shipment. It is a true piece of horological whimsy, born of the creativity of Seiko in the 1980s, when the brand multiplied original concepts.
On the wrist, the piece resembles none other. Closed, it intrigues with its gold-plated cover with a cut-out; open, it reveals a classically dressed dial while playing its melody. This play of hidden and revealed, doubled by the musical surprise, gives it all its charm and singularity. It is fitted on a dark brown crocodile-style leather strap, with a Buckle buckle, which is not original. The Lug width of 12mm directs the choice of replacement straps toward slimmer widths.

How does the musical cover of this watch work?
