Seiko Dolce vintage: a quartz with sweeping seconds hand

This Seiko Dolce watch is an elegant two-tone dress watch, with a rare and immediately visible distinction: its seconds hand does not “tick,” it sweeps. Powered by the Seiko 5S21 quartz with continuous sweep, it mimics the fluid motion of an automatic watch. Produced around 1990, in a round steel case enhanced with gold, it wears beautifully on both a man’s and a woman’s wrist. A characterful piece for the discerning collector.

The heart of this Seiko is its greatest asset: the 5S21 calibre, a quartz movement with a sweeping seconds hand developed by Seiko in the late 1980s. Where a conventional quartz movement steps forward in one-second increments, the 5S21 transforms this impulse into a perfectly fluid sweep, thanks to a spiral spring and a viscous regulator. On the wrist, the illusion is total: one would swear it is a mechanical watch. Produced in limited quantities and now sought after, this rare calibre bears witness to Seiko’s research, which would later lead to Spring Drive.

The silver dial, with fine vertical stripes and a subtle shimmering effect, catches the light delicately. It bears the signature “Seiko” and the name “Dolce”, a Roman numeral at 12 o’clock and slender applied gilt baton indexes. The round brushed steel case is enhanced by a bezel and lugs gold-plated, in a typically dressy two-tone spirit. The domed sapphire Crystal, particularly scratch-resistant, protects the whole.

With its 32.5mm case and slim profile, this vintage watch wears beautifully on both a man’s and a woman’s wrist — a true Unisex watch. The original dial and hands are in very fine condition, as is the sapphire Crystal. It is fitted with a genuine black crocodile leather strap, not original, with a steel pin Buckle.

Three points to note

  • Vintage two-tone Seiko Dolce watch (steel and gold-plated), shimmering silver dial, domed sapphire Crystal (circa 1990).
  • Rare 5S21 calibre with sweeping seconds hand: a fluid-sweep quartz that mimics a mechanical movement.
  • Unisex watch (men’s and women’s), slim and dressy profile; a sought-after piece for Seiko enthusiasts.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the seconds hand of this Seiko sweep instead of ticking?
Thanks to its 5S21 calibre, a quartz movement with a sweeping seconds hand. A hairspring and a viscous regulator transform the motor impulse into a continuous, fluid sweep, very close to that of a mechanical watch — even though it is a quartz movement.

Is the 5S21 calibre rare?
Yes. Produced by Seiko from the late 1980s and now discontinued, this continuous-sweep movement was made only in limited quantities. It is particularly sought after by enthusiasts, especially as it forms part of the research by Seiko that would later lead to Spring Drive technology.

What is the Seiko Dolce line?
Dolce is Seiko's collection of extra-thin dress watches, designed to offer elegant and refined timepieces. This two-tone version, in steel and gold-plated, is a fine example: understated, slim, and dressy.

Is the Crystal resistant?
Yes. This watch is fitted with a domed sapphire crystal Crystal, the most scratch-resistant material after diamond. The dial is thus protected and remains legible over time.

Is this Seiko watch suitable for a man or a woman?
It is a unisex watch. Its 32.5 mm round case suits both masculine and feminine wrists. Its dressy, two-tone character makes it an elegant watch for every occasion.
